The Mountaineers thumped Richmond, 66-22, in their opener. Indiana's lineup at game time is expected to be altered slightly from that which started against the Irish last Saturday in a respectable 18-0 loss for Indiana. Norm Craft is scheduled to start at left end, Ken Hubbart at the blocking back (quarterback) slot in the single wing and Tom McDonald at tailback (left half).

The ultimate prize may be the Indiana College Conference championship. Although this is the ICC opener for Butler, which has won two tuneups, and the second conference start for St.

Joseph's both squads are regarded the ones to whip for the title. ST. JOSEPH'S has been ICC king three straight years win ning 13 consecutive league games. Butler has a string of eight ICC and non-conference games gcing for it. Two of its ICC losses the last two seasons have been to St.

Indiana University's Fightin' Hoosiers will entertain the mountainous Mountaineers of West Virginia today in the home opener at Memorial Stadium. Coach Phil Dickens' first Indiana tests will be outweighed an average of nine pounds to the man in the line by a ponderous West Virginia forward wall which averages 212. It also will yield an average of three pounds a man to the backfield. THIS IS THE ONE the Hoosiers hope fondly to win to reverse the tide and start on the road back to winning football at Bloomington, but it certainly won't be easy. ever the optimists, are sensing an upset and a huge crowd of 75,000 is ex-r pected in the Cotton Bowl. While the Irish were having their troubles with Indiana last week, Southern Methodist was chasing highly-rated Ohio State all over Columbus before bowing 23-21. ADD THE FACT that SMU always has been a sticky opponent for the Irish and you have all the ingredients for a fine football game. Notre Dame holds a 7-2 lead In the short, spectacular series but the Mustangs have had a hand in two of the most mem-' orable games in Irish history. In 1949.

a team that has been called the greatest ever at Notre Dame, got tangled up in Kyle Rote and escaped with a pulsating 27-20 victory. In 1951, Fred Benner of SMU created sensation by throwing passes on every Mustang play in the first half and pacing a 27-20 verdict over the Irish. This trip the Mustangs have another great passer in Don Meredith. The national leader las season, Meredith completed 19 of 28 for 233 yards against Ohio State lat week. So It should be Meredith against the slashing runners of Notre Dame, led by Nick Pietrosante.

Pietrosante, -perhaps the best at Notre Dame since Emil Sitko, averaged 5.3 a carry last week and he wasn't in top condition. Today Only, at Our Downtown Men's Center! This will be Purdue's first trip to Houston, only the second for a Big Ten team. A crowd of nearly 70,000 is expected.

The Boilermakers, with hopeful eves on the Bie Ten title. displayed their usual rugged line plus a most unusual assortment of fancy running backs last week in a 28 0 victory over Nabraska. RICE IS ALL even after two games. The Owls lost in the rain, 26-2, to Louisiana State in their opener, but rebounded for a 30-7 decision over Stan ford. Touted as a passing team for nearly 10 years, the Boiler makers threw only seven times last week while chewing up 354 yards on the ground.

Five Purdue backs averaged bette than four vards a carry and little Jimmy Tiller showed enough in a brief appearanc to back up Purdue coaches' hopes that he might be the running sensation of the Big Ten this season. Rice has 17 lettermen from its 1957 champion club, the principal loss being All America Quarterback King Hill. And the Owls still have the tremendous Buddy Dial at end. There is a good possibility Purdue will try more passing tonight. This is the last tune up before Wisconsin.

Man for man, St. Joseph's may be the stronger team among first units, but the Bull dogs will have an advantage in depth. Its second line can move downfield as well as the first.

St. Joseph's has fast backs and its fullback Mike Murphy is a tremendous ground gainer. Halfback Larry Williams of Indianapolis Tech is the Pumas' No. 1 ground gaiher this season with a 6.3 average. These clubs haven't played a close game against each other in the last five years.

Butler won by 33, 34 and 28 points between 1952 and 1954, but the Pumas have taken the last three by 15, 25 and 21 points. BUTLER will have two players out halfback Joe Grisson and tackle Don Fulay-ter. Grissom has a torn rib cartilage and Fulayter an arm infection. Butler will be armed with fullback Kent Stewart, who has a 6.9 average and Kenny Long 6.1 and quarterback John Moses, who is flipping passes with a 63.6 percentage. AY RES' GLENDALEt Shirts 2.99 ea.
