Film Comedian Killed In Auto HOLLYWOOD, June 13. UJO-Charles Butterworth, 46, long' faced, droll comedian of stage and screen, was injured fatally early today when his British roadster went out of control and crashed into a lamp post. Butterworth died of a skull fracture en route to the hospital. He was attended by Dr. Lloyd P.

Taintor. Investigating officers said Butterworth apparently had been driving at a high rate of speed when the car went out of control. Skid marks 180 feet long were found on the pavement. The actor never regained consciousness after he was taken from his car where it came to rest against a shop front. Butterworth, a former newspaperman appeared in such motion pictures as "Life of the Party," "Illicit," and "Baby Face Hairing- ton." Born at South Bend, Butterworth attended Notre Dame university where he obtained an LL.

B. degree. He passed the Indiana state bar examination then obtained a cub' reporter's job on the South Bend News-Times. Later Butterworth went to Chi" cage where he worked on the old Chicago American. Moving to New York he found metropolitan editors cool toward his journalistic ambl- tions and he turned to the upstate Mt.

Vernon Argus for a job. The New York Times later hired him as a general assignment reporter. While on the staff of the Times he became acquainted with Broad way ites Heywood Broun, Walter O'Keefe, and Frank Sullivan who were his closest friends in later years. Given a chance to do a comedy monologue in a press club show, Butterworth turned out to be a hit and immediately sought a stage career. In 1932, Butterworth married the former Ethel Sutherland who divorced him seven years later, charging he failed to bring home the droll and amiable qualities he played in the movies.
