The measura also would cut the down payments on FHA-insured home loans. It was passed 69-1 after three days of debate. It goes to conference with the House which passed a much larger bill carrying $2,473,000,000 in new authorizations. THE SENATE version Includes money to continue slum clearance programs, to provide a market for home mortgages where private lenders are not available, and to continue programs providing college housing, armed forces housing, cooperative housing, and homes for such special groups as minorities and the aged. But the measure was trimmed down in Senate voting far below the $2,850,000,-000 in new appropriations contained in the bill as it emerged from the Banking Committee. Some senators such as Senator Byrd (D.-Va.) complained that the totals in the bill still were about $450,000,000 above President Eisenhower's budget requests for housing. They said NEW! And Television Programs For Thursday (All Programs Dated Central Oavliirht Time) etr. this would wipe out all the savings made by the Senate to far on appropriations bills. THE SENATE beat down an effort of some Democrats to make a big increase in the public housing program to 200,000 units a year for two years. Present law calls for 35,000 for ona future year. The proposed change was beaten 54-20. However, the bill does contain several provisions liberalizing the public housing program. One of these would permit families of somewhat higher income to continue in public housing. Another would raise the maximum cost limits for construction of the units. A third would eliminate from the law the so-called "workable program" requirement that cities must meet before they can start a new project. The lower down payments on FHA loans in the bill would be at the rate of 3 per cent on the first $10,000 of the cost of a house, 10 per cent on the next $6,000, and 30 per cent above that up to $20,000. Present law provides for 5 per cent on the first $9,000 and 25 per cent above that. j WFxIS-F3I LoS 95.5 Mtoacvcla fCantral Dovlisht Tim THURSDAY PROGRAM Memine 6 OO-Sun Seranad I 8 00-Mrrn.
