SATURDAY, MARCH 17, 1956- THE INDIANAPOLIS STAR PAGE 9 They'll Be Wearin' Tlie Greeti Today Farm Bill Vote Due Next Week Ike Is Given Real Shamrocks By Ireland's Prime Minister today! LAST DAY to shop for Spring JUBILEE SALE is due in New York today to review the St. Patrick's Day parade there. The President handed Costello a white package tied with green ribbon. Inside was a sliver-framed autographed picture of Mr. Eisenhower.

He said he had planned to give Costello some Steuben glassware but It had not arrived in time. At the State Department, representatives of Ireland and the United States signed an agreement for co-operation in research on peaceful uses of atomic energy. It is one of many the United States has negotiated under Mr. Eisenhower's "atoms for peace" program. UNDER THE AGREEMENT, the United States will help Ireland build an atomic research reactor and lease up to 13.2 pounds of uranium to run it.

Costello, first Irish prime minister to visit this country in his official capacity, has captured the heart of official Washington by his charm and joviality. The Washington Post and Times-Herald noted in an editorial that "his visitation has occasioned more popular fuss and excitement in part because of its novelty than the recent visit of the British prime minister, Sir Anthony Eden." Washington (UP) Irish Prime Minister John A. Costello brought St. Patrick's Day to President Eisenhower yesterday. A day early to be sure, but just as welcome.

Costello handed Mr. Eisenhower a bunch of shamrocks from Dungarvin, County Water-ford, Ireland. They were in a 169-year-old Irish silver bowl. THE PRESIDENT, who is proud to be an honorary member of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, beamed with pleasure.

He said "I'm going to take these up to Mrs. Eisenhower" at the farm and "she'll be very pleased." The brief White House ceremony was held a day early so Mr. Eisenhower could leave on a week-end trip to his Gettysburg, (Pa.) Tarm. Costello also savings, Washington (INS) A weary Senate last night gave up trying to its amendment-ridden farm bill to passage this week and decided to quit until Monday. Some legislators said it may even be Tuesday or Wednesday before final action is reached on th battle-scarred measure to raise farm Income which has been under debate since Feb.

22. Agriculture Committee Chairman Allen J. Ellender asked Majority Leader Lyndon Johnson for assurance that the Senate would stay in session Monday until the bill is passed. IIOWKYER, Johnson said he could not give that assurance. He said they would try for final action "if possible," and he might try again to further reduce the limitation on debate.

Senator Milton R. Young N.D.) told a reporter that it is so late now, he doubts that more than one-third of the ration's farmers would participate this year in the proposed soil bank program for cutting back production. President Eisenhower repeatedly has urged speed on the bill so that farmers will know where they stand before the spring planting season starts. SENATOR Robert S. Kerr told newsmen there may be a last minute attempt to make still another try for approval of 90 per cent price supports on basic crops this year.

But some said this battle will be put off until the House-Senate conference is held to adjust differences in the bills passed by both houses. Vice President Richard M. Nixon broke a 45 to 43 tie a week ago to defeat an amendment for restoration of 90 percent price supports on millable wheat for one year. Since then, Democrats have picked up a new member, Senator William R. Laird III, who succeeded the late Senator Harley M.

Kilgore Laird voted Thursday with the Democratic majority on the critical amendment providing for a dual parity system. The amendment was adopted 45 to 44 to give the administration a major setback on the bill. The outcome on this issue was said to give backers of 90 per cent supports hope that they might be able to carry the day if they pressed anew for a one-year restoration of the higher props. jubilee SALE 2,400 MEN'S SPORT SHIRTS and KNIT SHIRTS slifjht irrpejuJars ot 1.98, 2J09 2.98 Stalin Issue Stirs Riots In Russia Indiana Tax Concluded From Page 1 carried on closed circuit television. "Fans simply will not go and pay to see local shows when they can see 'stars' on TV for nothing," Hindman commented.

"AS YET there hasn't been an application made to stage a 100 per cent studio-produced professional boxing or wrestling show, but we are sure the time isn't far off. "Surely no one can say that these studio bouts don't need supervision, and this costs snoney." Hindman expressed confidence his legislative proposal would get the backing of Governor George N. Craig. Washington (AP) American officials said last night they have unconfirmed reports that a number of persons were killed in rioting in Russia nine days ago. The State Department declined to comment.

They said the deaths are reported to have resulted in rioting in Joseph Stalin's native Repuhlic of Georgia in protest against Kremlin efforts to downgrade Stalin in Communists' memories. The number of dead is unknown, officials said, and Soviet armed forces as well as police were reported to have been called into action, THE CENTER of the disturbance, according to the reports, was Tiflis, capital of Georgia and not far from Stalin's birthplace.

March 5 was the third anniversary of Stalin's death. Neither the Soviet Party paper Pravda nor the government paper Izvestia printed a line about it. However, the Georgian newspaper Zarya Vistoka was reported from Moscow to have printed a three-column photograph of Stalin in a front-page spread devoted to the late Soviet Chief. Officials suggested that permission for such a display might have been granted in a move to appease the Georgians after the reported demonstrations on March 8, the day before. The new Russian leaders' policy of downgrading Stalin was made public Feb.

Failure To Teach American Way Of Life Assailed Hoosier educators were told yesterday by a former California school superintendent that "failure to teach the American way of life" is the nation's No. 1 education problem. "The curriculum continues to grow but it constantly tends to veer away from the basic fundamentals," Dr. Alexander J. Stoddard of Los Angeles, declared.

Addressing a conference sponsored by the Indiana University School of Education and the City, Town and County Superintendents Association, the retired educator charged school administrators and teachers are allowing today's youth to complete their education "without understanding their heritage." "I wish boys and girls could know something of the price we paid for this country," Dr. Stoddard said. 'The freedom we enjoy is purchased through disciplineit is not something that can be obtained at a bargain counter." Number-one style on the spring hit parade!
