Advances led declines, 860 to 463, among the 1,785 issues crossing the New York Stock Exchange tape. There was little in the news background to spark the buying. Analysts said institutional and foreign investors were finding prices of many issues attractive and didn't want to miss a major market move. Observers have been impressed by the market's peformance in the face of confusing economic news and rising interest rates. Interest rates are expected to rise even further as new Federal Reserve Chairman Paul Volcker seeks to control inflation.

SLIGO, Ireland (UPI) Lord Mountbatten, cousin to Queen Elizabeth and one of the most famous sol- dlier-statesmen of his time, was killed Monday in an explosion aboard a yacht off the Irish coast.

Two IRA terrorist groups claimed responsibility. Mountbatten, 79, Supreme Commander of Allied Forces in Southeast Asia in World War II, was killed instantly. His grandson, Nicolas, 25, also was killed along with the pilot of the boat, Paul Maxwell. Hospital officials reported the injured included another grandson, Mountbatten's daughter and heir, Lady Patricia, 55, and her film producer husband Lord Brabourne. All were listed in serious condition.

The Irish Republican Army and the Irish National Liberation Army, a left- wing splinter group of the IRA, both claimed responsibility for the blast that occurred near the border with Northern Ireland and less than 50 miles from Galway, one of the stops on Pope John Paul ITs tour next month. If the bomb claim is true, Mountbat- ten, the Earl of Burma, would be the highest-ranking member of the royal family to be assassinated in modem history. NOTIC Due to the Labor Day Holiday.
