Michael A. Rhodes Sr. of Goodlettsville for the second time in four years has been reprimanded by the state for over-prescribing narcotics. The Tennessee Board of Medical Examiners fined him $12,500 and put his medical license on probation for five years for the latest infractions. State investigators reviewed the records of 25 patients when he worked at Medical Necessities and determined that he prescribed "controlled substances in amounts andor for durations not medically necessary, advisable or justified for a diagnosed condition." The board in 2009 fined Rhodes $9,000 for other controlled substance violations.

Rhodes also was required to complete training programs on medical ethics, record keeping and prescribing controlled drugs. The latest ruling, which was handed down last month, requires that he practice medicine under a monitor during his five-year probation and that he receive more training. Another Middle Tennessee physician, Dr. William Hudson III of Clarks-ville, was reprimanded by the board for prescribing narcotics without documenting the reasons for the amounts or durations of the drugs and for failing to adequately monitor patients for signs of substance abuse. The board ordered Hudson to complete a three-day medical course on medical record keeping and to pay a $1,000 penalty.

He also agreed to no longer prescribe any drugs containing the ingredient meperidine, such as Demerol. He agreed to be monitored for two years. A Nashville physician, Dr. Maurice C. Kuttab, was fined $9,000 and had his license suspended for 90 days for refusing to turn over medical records to a state investigator in January and February of 2010.
