Larry Cantrell, a football and track star at old Goodlettsville High (1983-85). Cantrell was a running back on the Trojans football team and a standout in running and field events in track.

He won the 100-, 200-and 400-meters three consecutive years at the state meet along with the long jump as a junior and senior. He was featured in Sports Illustrated's "Faces In The Crowd" in the June 25, 1984, edition for winning four events in the state meet. Anyone wishing to attend the induction ceremony should call 615-319-3057. Ex-Kats star receives good medical news Longtime Nashville Kats star Darryl Hammond received some good news on the anniversary of being diagnosed with a brain tumor. An MRI taken last week revealed the tumor, which is benign, is not as large as it was previously.

Hammond underwent 30 treatments of radiation last summer. "The doctor said it's shrinking, so that's good," said Hammond, 36, who lives in Bellevue. "I'll have another MRI in about six months, and hopefully it will continue to shrink." Hammond is No. 19 on the Arena Football League 25 All-Time Greatest Players list. He played for the Kats in their inaugural season (1997), earned All-Arena honors in 1999 and made the All-Ironman Team in 2000.

Hammond also led the Kats to the ArenaBowl that year and again in 2001. The Kats left Nashville in 2002. When they returned in 2005, Hammond rejoined them for the final two years of his career. He retired after playing in 186 AFL games in 16 seasons. The brain tumor has limited what Hammond is able to do.

"It affects my speech, my breathing and my ability to swallow," he said. "I can lift weights, but I can't do any cardiovascular exercises other than walk. I can still play golf, so that's good." Hammond played in a golf tournament at Harpeth Hills while undergoing radiation treatment, finishing third in his flight after firing a 79. "I left the course and went straight in for a radiation treatment that day," he said. Hammond is on hiatus from his job as a talent coordinator for the TV reality series "Dance Moms" on the Lifetime Channel.

Superspeedway stuck in neutral I spoke this week with Gary Camp of Dover Mo-torsports which owns Nashville Superspeedway, and he said the only action again this year on the 1.33-mile track would be NASCAR teams testing there. There hasn't been a race at the 13-year-old facility near Lebanon since 2011. Dover cited poor attendance when it shut down the track. The track was used about 50 days each of the past two years for testing by nearly every major NASCAR team. That could increase this year, Camp said, with the possibility of some IRL teams also testing there.

"It stays fairly busy with testing, and we're always willing to listen to anyone interested in having a race there," Camp said. Coutras became a legendary coach. Coutras spent 16 years as the coach at Overton, where he posted a career record of 144-36-1. He led the Bobcats to the 1981 state championship and 11 top-10 finishes in the state. Coutras left Overton and revived the football program at Cumberland in 1990.

Dale Beck, a CALENDAR PREDATORS standout at old Howard High (1947-49) and two-time winner of the Hume Pearl man pens book on the Lakers Former Tennessean sports writer Jeff Pearl-man has written a new book on the glory days of the L.A. Lakers. "Showtime: Magic, Ka-reem, Riley, and the Los Angeles Lakers Dynasty of the 1980s" covers the nine NBA championship series in which the team played from 1980-1991. Pearlman interviewed nearly 300 people for the book, which took him back to his days as a fan. "I'm a kid of the 1980s, and the Lakers were everything Magic, Kareem, Worthy, Riley, Rambis, fastbreak and high-flying and Coop-a-loops," Pearl-man said.

"Just the absolute best time to be a fan of the game. So I wanted to dive in and return to my childhood. Which was fantastic." The book, which is Pearl-man's sixth, already has received several favorable reviews including one from The L.A. Times' Chris Er-skine, who wrote that it is, "brilliantly woven together" and is "a marvelous and dishy history of the Showtime Lakers, full of bare-knuckled assessments, some of them unpleasant." Fan yells at former Vandy assistant Gib Arnold, the Hawaii basketball coach confronted by an angry fan who ran onto the court during a game Thursday against UC Santa Barbara, is a former Vanderbilt assistant. Arnold spent the 1997-98 and 1998-99 seasons on Jan van Breda Kolff 's staff.

He also followed van Breda Kolff to Pepperdine in 2000. "It was a little crazy to have a fan pushing your players around," Arnold told ESPN. "I've never seen it. You don't expect it." The fan, wearing a UCSB Class of 2014 T-shirt, was arrested. Running back Davenport leaves TSU Former Riverdale running back Adam Davenport has left the football team at Tennessee State.

Davenport is on an academic scholarship and will remain in school to work toward his degree. He transferred from Navy to TSU last season and rushed for 174 yards on 47 carries. Davenport still had three years of eligibility. Hurt decides to go to Kansas State Stephen Hurt, a 6-foot-10 former Siegel High basketball standout, now has been through the recruiting process twice. Back in 2011, Hurt signed with Lipscomb, which was among a handful of mid-major schools that pursued him.

After tearing his MCL in his right knee, Hurt sat out his freshman season at Lipscomb, grew three inches, and then played in 2012-13. He was named the Atlantic-Sun Freshman of the Year, but decided to transfer after Scott Sanderson was not retained as the Bisons coach. Hurt spent this season at Northwest Florida State, a junior college, and recently committed to finish his career at Kansas State. He had become a much hotter prospect this time, receiving offers from 12 major-conference schools. Hurt will have two years of eligibility remaining.

Ex-Overton star leads unbeaten Meigs Jeremy Miller, a former Overton High basketball and baseball standout (1994-96), coached the junior high team at Meigs Magnet School to a 20-0 record this season. Meigs capped the season with a 48-47 win over previously unbeaten H.G. Hill in the city tournament. After an extended half-time break, which lasted 45 minutes because of tornado warnings, Meigs rallied by going on a 27-5 run in the third quarter to win that game. Former BGA slugger receives ACC award Chris Marconcini, a Battle Ground Academy graduate, was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Player of the Week last week.

Marconcini, a junior first baseman at Duke, hit .667 (10-for-15) over a stretch of four games. He had two home runs, two doubles and seven RBIs.
