The Tennessean 20A SUNDAY, MAY 4, 2014 POLLY DUFF Madison, AL CONNOR JOHN GAWALUCK Boulder, CO W'V'Sa Connor Tohn Polly Pate Duff passed away on Friday, May 2, 2014. Polly was born on May 18, 1924 in Gaines-boro, TN to the late Irby Bue Pate and Vivian Cooper Pate. After living in Ft. Worth, TX, Charlotte, NC and Nashville during her youth, she graduated from Jackson County High School in 1944. Gawaluck, age 20 of Boulder, CO and Nashville, died Sunday, April 27, 2014 at his Boulder residence.

Connor was a student at the University of Colorado, Boulder and a member of Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity. Connor was born in Denver on July 9, 1993 to John Thomas Gawaluck and Lorelee Ann Ratliff STERLING BENSON HUNT Fort Collins, CO Sterling Benson Hunt, born August 13, 1920, lived through the great transition from land-bound rural society to urban mobile society, and embodied many of the changes that went with it. Raised on a tobacco farm near Pleasant View, TN, he worked the land with mules, sometimes breaking ground never before plowed. He hauled water to the house from a nearby spring. His childhood home was heated only by fireplaces, and he remembered the introduction of electricity, indoor plumbing, and the first telephone service to that home.

Sterling left the farm in pursuit of higher education at Tennessee Polytechnic Institute (TPI) in Cookeville, TN. World War II interrupted his education, and he served in the Army Air Corps as a B-25 bomber pilot in the South Pacific theater of operations until the war ended. During pilot training, he married Bonnie Hix. After the war, Sterling returned to TPI and finished his degree in Civil Engineering. He started working for Southern Railway, and raised three boys with Bonnie, all of whom graduated from The Georgia Institute of Technology.

Sterling retired from the railroad in 1982 and lived in Atlanta, GA until he moved to Ft. Collins, CO in 2007 to be closer to his two grandchildren. He was good with numbers, cleaver with words, and an innovative problem solver. He bore his mental and physical decline with grace and good humor, invariably a favorite with all his caregivers and neighbors. Even in his very last years, he would quote lines of poetry studied in the one-room schoolhouse of his youth.

He will be remembered by those who knew him for his positive attitude and willingness to be part of a solution rather than a burden to anyone around him. Gawaluck. He attended Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville, TN and was currently studying Business Finance Accounting at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Connor enjoyed the outdoors; fishing, cycling, tennis and golf. He cherished the time he spent with the brotherhood of the Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity and Montgomery Bell Academy.

Connor is survived by his parents, John and Lorelee of Nashville, TN; grandparents, Sophia Gawaluck and Jane Ratliff; brother, Greylon Gawaluck of Wake Forest University, NC; and sister, Isabella Gawaluck of Nashville, TN. December 23, 1925 May 2, 2014. Of Old Hickory, TN, formerly of Memphis Paris, TN. After nineteen months in military hospitals, the Navy sent Hoss Kennon home to die. The Navy and Army doctors who had been treating him finally admitted that they couldn't keep him alive any longer, and wanted him to be at home when the inevitable happened. The farm boy, who three summers earlier could jump into the saddle of a galloping horse without touching the stirrups, wasn't supposed to live another month.

His mother, Minnie Kennon, who already had her other three sons home safely from WWII, told them they were wrong. "I'm not about to in H0GE, JR. LAWRENCE R. to Paris, TN. That penicillin, the first penicillin in Tennessee, and his mother's determination, saved Hoss's life. His recovery would still take another year. He would finish high school, marry the former LaRue Montgomery of McKenzie, TN, go back to work for the Department of Defense, and raise two sons and make sure they got through college and graduate school. Then, he would watch as his three grandchildren were born.

He retired from the Department of Defense after thirty-one years, volunteered as a driver for the Crippled and Burned Unit of the Shriners Hospitals, carrying hundreds of children to the Shriner's burn unit in Galveston, TX, and the Crippled Children's Hospital in Louisville, KY for the next fifteen years. He also volunteered with the Shelby County Sheriff's Department at the Agricultural Center. So, for 70 years, his mother would be right. In later years, her fight would be carried on by Hoss's son, the Doctor, who was just as determined to keep Hoss alive. Today, Hoss joined the 1.3 million Americans who have died from war-related deaths since the Revolutionary War.
