NOW, OB NEVER! The FRESSO REPUBLICAN wants a public park, "a place to which the public can resort for recreation, tind pleasure, outside of brick walls and the sliacJe of board or canvas awnings; away from the noise and dust of our streets, and the smell of bees saloons and garbage heaps." Brother Miller, you are right about this, sure. Every city and town in the state should have a public park. For years we labored to induce our people to see the necessity for such an oasis in Ala meda, but the odds were against us, and now property is held so high, and there are so few desirable localities large enough for this purpose left, that we have almost given up the idea ot ever seeing a public park in Alameda. But the present is the time for Fresno people to move in the matter. You have unlimited quantities of land, easy of access, and if yon don't appropriate it now, your opportunity may soon be gone forever.

TVe heartily agree with you that "a public park, with shady walks and avenues, with a grove of dense foliaged trees, and seats for out-door meetings or public gatherings, grounds games of different kinds, fountains throwing up cool and sparkling water, and the numberless tropical flowers and plants which grow so spontaneously ia our climate blooming on every side, would be such an elysium, such a delightful retreat from the heat and dust of streets and barren plain, that its blessings would be almost Encinal. There is vacant land enough around the court house, yet unimproved, to make a handsome and convenient public park. Planted to good shade trees, ornamental shrubs and lawn grass, we would have a beginning that would, in three years, be a source of both pride and comfort to all the county. Farmers earning to town with their families would then find a place in which to pass the heated hours and enjoy their lunch. Our townspeople could there spend the leisure hours in shade and comfort.

Picnic gatherings would be splendidly accommodated and when, on the 4th of July our citizens choose to assemble to listen to a patriotic oration, they would be spared the punishment of suffocating in a barbarously ventilated hall. Let us have a park, by all means. There are always enough boarders in the county jail to perform the work of cultivating, and the expense for irrigation v. ould be trifling. Every progressive citizen in the count? would look upon a public park, in our with feelings of honest pride, for every worthy citizen in the county would be a stockholder in the enterprise.

EA1LBOAD COMMISSIONER. We have heard the name of Dr. Ches- erMtowell, of Fresno, as a probable andidate before the -Republican Con- ention, for Railroad Commissioner from lis district. As the railroad question the one in which the people are more ireetly interested than any other, the iterests of -the people will be served le best for nominating for that office, nly men of iutegrity whose views upon lat question are "well known. Dr.

towell is most favorably known, not nlv in this valley, but all over the state a man of undoubted ability and sty. His record upon all questions ot mporttuice is before the people. As a umber or'the last State Senate, he was Iways found on the right side of every ital question. No more suitable imtioil could be made, and if the Ecpuli- Convention sees fit to uominite iia, the voters of the district will attend his election. He can poll more votes the Southern part of the San Joaquin alley than any other ndependenl.

OCR article on Summer Fallowing, ublished May 34th, looks very well in he columns of the San Benito Advance, as well as the papers who credit the Ad- ance with the same. Jump on, breth- en, you are all welcome. THE Democratic State Convention declares its "unshaken faith in the traditions of the Democratic party, us illustrated by the teachings of a long line of Democratic statesmen." Traditions arc good things to cling to. but it is about time the Democracy had found something less ancient than their traditions upon which to hang their patriotic torms while they pray for the fat things of political success. The platform asks for the repeal of the Sunday law, the federal protection of our rivers, and opposes any compromise with the railroad company on taxes.

The greatest convulsion in the committee's case was when they took up the Chinese plank. Tlijs was deemed the heaviest piece of timber in the whole platform, and disregarding the late election in Oregon, the Democracy labored hard to make the Chinese question the leading one of the cam' paign. Upon this they propose to ride while the question of "slickens," the Sunday law and monopoly abuses wiV be used as pavement stones upon which to trot the anti-Chinese nag. THE Gubernatorial honors of Arizon are badly mixed with petty trouble, an everything connected with the position is not to be classified among the lusurie of political life. Governor Fremont spe most of his time out of the Territory and the affairs of his office seemed to lacking in that happy attraction neces sary to enlist his undivided energies Now comes Governor Tiittle, the a most business-like man, and says has no house, not even a desk, and o.

taking the position he was compelled borrow blanks and papers from the Tor itory of New Mexico. His contingcn fund ia but $500 ft year, and with thi he is expected to apprehend cowboy and preserve tbe peace of a no: ove peaceful but heterogeneous people. THE Examiner is likewise sour Oregon. It says: "The Republican bought votes like cattle, paying for them from 12.50 to $5." In making this an nouncement the Examiner has saidnotl: ing We do not recall the tim when Oregon gave a republican majorit that Democratic journals didn't mak this identical squeal. If such be th truth, we rise to say that it is abou time the Democrats of Oregon began improve their brce-i.

We know of better stock than the editor of the Stock ton Herald, who says "The result in On jjon can not be considered as other thn encouraging to the Democracy." A in who can be so che-rful in the slmdoir defeat on not be bought for ao JunUyforia. NEW ADVERTISEMENTS. Another Democratic Voice. EDITOR REPUBLICAN the course human events it sometimes becomes ecessery for a Democrat to send bis ommunication'to a Republican paper or publication. Such action is deemed ecessary at this time, for reasons which nay be given in detail if desired by the arty aggrieved.

As a Democrat, I am sliajned and grieved that causes have risen which are bound to create dis- ensions among Democrats. The hasty, rbitrary action of the Democratic Cen- ral Committee will prove to be the worst low the Democrats of this county have for a long time. Owing to the hort period of time given in which to old primaries, it is patent to every un- iascd mind that a new aspirant hue not ic shadow of a chance for a nomination gainst the present incumbents, who, I elieve, with but one exception, are can- idates for re-nomination, or a uomina- ion to a better office than the one relin- uished. Some of those who aspire to a e-nomination are called good men and ood officers, and by a certain class re pronounced princes of liberality nd sociability. I consider all that, but ave an idea where the money comes rom.

I do not accuse them os guilty of nything wrong or illegitimate, but I say mt they have been there long enouah. jet them step down and out and settle. The people want to see if they are good itizens. We have known them, a great many of us, only in the capacity of ounty officers. Do they represent the urvival of the fittest, and is the Derno- ratic timber so culled that they are the oivers of the Democratic forest of Fresno county? Are other deserving, as- iring and competent citizens to wait ntil this ever-blooming, swect-bcented imily of roses fade away and die ere ney may dare to ask for an office? We annot prevent them from getting the omination, by reason of the action of le Central Committee, but with their chemes we can and will, all over this ounty, let the primaries severely lone, and speak to them in thundering ones ut the ballot box.

Rotation in of- ce is a Democratic principle, and should ie earned out. Dissensions cannot arise i is adhered to. No one will object ut the old party head, and those that vill be found handiins the patty whip compef obedience to the nomina- iona. They are always supplied nilli a ictionary if such as sure-head, mongrel, pinto, etc. No one need im- gine for a moment that he can onliuntiun, however small, flora thi' onvention that will meet in July, unless is the tool and puppet of the great ircle for whose benefit they meet.
