Some may have watched the young lady leave the vehicle after turning on its blinkers and locking the doors.

A few may have even seen another driver top to offer assistance. It all began as 20-year- old Ann Louise Harmeier was returning to Indiana niversity in Blooming- on from her home in ambridge City, when her Pontiac LeMans topped running on Ind. 37, just north of Martinsville. To this day, no one ex- ept perhaps her killer knows exactly what hap- ened Sept. 12, 1977.

Concern mounted when Harmeier did not arrive at IU as sched- led. Her mother, Marjorie Harmeier, and a close amily friend headed to Bloomington. Along the way they spotted her broken-down car. Police ere contacted, and a issing person report was filed. In the weeks that followed, police investigators checked hundreds of leads, combed acres of wooded areas that spread to ad- oining counties and even Kentucky.

A nationwide search, financed in part by donations of sev- ral thousands of dollars rom Cambridge City esidents who hung posters and pic- ure in numerous places in hopes someone had seen her and could provide information about he missing co-ed. Sadly, more than a onth later, their worst fears became reality. A Martinsville farmer spotted her decomposed ody from atop his picker as he was harvesting orn. An autopsy revealed that Harmeier probably had been strangled and raped. I the almost four dec- a des since the homicide, olice have continued their investigation, thoroughly checking any new tips to no avail.

Over the years, other IU students have vanished Jill Behrman, Lauren Spierer, Hannah ilson. Police manage to solve most killings, but the pain of those that re- ain unsolved, such as and Harm are haunting for family, friends and law fficers. In the most recent case, a suspect has been charged, but until a convict ion, the case is not solved. I you have any information about the Harmeier or Spierer cases, call the Bloomington Pol ice Department at (812) 339-4477 or email police- Call Star researcher Cathy Knapp at (317) 444-6487.
