Arizona Sailors Lead District Laser Test By Dick Rosetta Tribune Sports Writer was a bonanza for three out of four point leaders Saturday night at Bonneville Raceway Park as Bill Madsen, Merlin Beynon and Rocky Card added substantially to their season leads, but the evening was not so kind to ministock leader Chuck Verde. Performing before a sparse gathering of just over 1,500 fans, Madsen ran away with the 25-lap supermodified main, Beynon lapped nearly the entire field in his superstock triumph, Bill May was the street stock winner after a penalty took Rocky Card out of victory circle and Lynn Potter won the mini main. Madsen was probably lucky to be in the main event.

In the trophy dash, he locked up with Pocatelio's Dennis Davis but, while Davis spun out and broke his rear engine around the left wheel area, Madsen was able to continue and his crew later fixed a bent suspension iron. It was an excellent repair job, since Madsen came out to start at the rear'of the pack arxl. in the backstretch of the fifth lap, he was in front of the 10-car main as he passed Terry Nish. Madsen gained some more valuable ground on second place Joel Terry who finished fourth in main and now trails by some 125 points for the 1977 title. Nish held on for second with Alma Facer third, Terry fourth, Pat Sullivan fifth and fast qualifier Dick Ammons sixth.

Beynon shot out front on the fourth lap of a 20-lap mam and simply had no competition as he outdistanced Dusty Dastrup and Ron Lublin. Beynon added a big bundle of points to his' superstock lead with his chief competitor, Danny Caputo, setting out a suspension for an altercation after last week's races. Jim Eaton, also near the top in points, was suspended for the race as well and his teammate, Bill Payne, pulled out also THC COMMAND PERFORMANCE CAR. and sailors-began racing for the District 23 Laser Championships here Saturday. While the wind came up as expected, picking the race winners was more of a problem. The fleet included 22 of the test Laser sailors in Utah and Arizona. One skipper, Don Hubele, from Phoenix, has about 35 years sailing experience under his belt- It became a battle between a relatively young crop of Utah sailors and an older, more experienced Arizona" group. The first race was an all-Utah event with Sean Carson edging Chris Hoffman by less than a boat length at the finish.

Hoffman made a superb start and picking the fast side of the line, he shot across on a port tack. He led the whole race. Carson advanced through the pack and picked the wind carefully for a shot at the lead. Hoffman stayed close to the shore and played the wind on the second lap. Carson appeared to gain on him with a straighter line down the middle but the shore gusts proved worthwhile giving Hoffman good power.

Wind gusts advanced across the reservoir, lifting the fleet into plaining speed and causing problems for the lighter sailors. The fleet's only woman, Faye Sarno from Phoenix, spent a good deal of time righting her capsized boat. She seemed to spend as much time in the water as she did on it. One sailor went into a "death capsized his boat and attempted to right it. He climbed out on the center board giving leverage to right bis boat, then, just as the mast began to come out of the water, the wind caught it and blew the boat over the other way.

Watching the sailor on his up and down amusement ride, as he went from capsize to capsize, proved the delicate touch needed to campaign the lightweight Lasers. Weighing only 135 pounds the 14-foot, "cat rigged, boats are becoming one of the two most popular classes of competition boats. There have been more than 50,000 Lasers sold since 1970. In the afternoon, the Arizona sailors' took over the points lead and with four of the scheduled seven, races completed, Bob Bigelow and Gil Wallace are first and second with Utahns Chris Hoffman and Brad Silver tied with Don Hubele for third. Carew on.

Cover? No Way! BLOOMINGTON, Minn. (AP) Minnesota's Rod Carew said Saturday be doesn't care if he ever appears on the cover of baseball's-leading weekly publication again. "Hell with The Sporting News," said Carew following the Twins' 6-5 victory over Cleveland! "They want Larry Hisle and me to pose for a cover story and I think that either one of us are good enough on our own merits." "Where were they (Sporting News) when I was hitting .500 during the month of June," said Carew, whose .383 batting average is the best in baseball. "I don't need them." The Twins' first baseman was mad when ea ate Butch Wynegar, who was then locked in a long slump, was the subject of a cover story in early July while Carew was hitting over .400. Hisle, who continues to lead the American League with 87 runs batted in despite sitting out the last week with a sprained ankle, wasn't bothered by Carew's decision.

"People can do whatever they want to," said Hisle. "I've learned that it's part of We." Hisle has never appeared on the cover of The Sporting News, a weekly tabloid devoted mostly to baseball coverage. The 31-year-old Carew, whose 11-year major league career has been dotted with emotional outbursts, had earlier agreed to be on band with Hisle at 10:30 Saturday morning to have the color picture taken for the pub' When the photographer arrived, Carew said be had changed his mind.
