'Doctors' May Sell Soap But Isn't Soap Opera By JACK GAVF.R New York (UPI) THERE IS NO denying that the sponsor of Jerry Layton's television show sells soap. Or that the program is an afternoon series, Monday through Friday, on NBC. But don't refer to The Doctors as a "soap opera." Layton says it isn't, and he doesn't like the term anyway. "Tho term was inherited from the strip serials of radio," the producer said, "and in television it simply means taken shortcuts in production to cut down costs. Of course, at the same time, you cut down quality. We employ a full mo tion picture technique in re cording our show and skimp on nothing." THE DOCTORS also is not a serial in the accepted radio and television sense. Each day's half-hour story is complete. There is a nucleus of four continuing actors, portraying members of the staff of a metropolitan hospital, but all are not in every story. Only one or two may be involved on any given day. Besides, two different directors are used and the scripts come from a wide variety of writers. "There are no mechanical aids to give the actors their lines during performance either," said Layton.
