QU 0 Reeser Stephens V. COUPON By MARK SCHNEIDER STAR STAFF WRITER Many football squads would settle for being one of the best teams In the state in its class. Franklin Central may be one of the best teams in the state. Period. The defending Class 4A state Area records, schedule, Page 8 runners-up Flashes, ranked No.

1 in their class, take a burgeoning reputation to Lawrence North to meet the Wildcats, honorable mention in 5A, tonight at 7:30 at Dwaine Bell Stadium. This battle of unbeatens from different classes points out one of the quirks of the IHSAA football classification (by male enrollment) system. When the IHSAA realigned classes last year for the next two seasons, Franklin Central was just a student or two under the 5A limit, while Lawrence North was just over the 5A cutoff. Now, the Franklin TownshiD with running backs Damon Watts and Donte Crawford, quarterback David Hampton and receivers Jeff McConnell. Brian Johnson and Ryan Hayden.

"Oh. they have plenty of weapons, too," notes Stephens. The area is dotted with other outstanding games tonight. Foremost on the list will be a Class 5A showdown at Carmel where the 2-1 and eighth-rated Greyhounds host Warren Central's 3-0 and fourth-ranked Warriors. Also there's a 2A clash between West Central Conference rivals Monrovia (3-0) and Owen Valley (3-0).

Elsewhere, Ben Davis, coming off a victory over rival North Central, hosts 3A Cathedral, with the Irish coming off an upset of 5A ranked Terre Haute South. Also, there will be a dou-bleheader in the Hoosier Dome with Noblesville facing Perry Meridian at 6 and 3A state champion and fourth-ranked Roncalli versus Southport, tentatively set for 8:30. "That's what it's going to take for us to have a chance against them," Reeser said. "They are solid offensively and defensively. They have experience across the board.

(Coach) Chuck (Stephens) is a good coach and his staff does an excellent Job." The Flashes boast speedsters Rory Norris, Eric Kelly, LaRon Moore and Copatrick Dartis and quarterback Kevin Johnson. "They have the talent to explode at any time and go all the way," says Reeser. Despite a 3-0 record and glowing praise from coaches from all over central Indiana, Stephens insists his Flashes have room for improvement. "We haven't become a real team yet," he claims. "Sometimes when you have success as underclassmen, you forget the hard work it took to get you there." As for the Wildcats? Reeser says North has had a good complement on offense BUSINESS IS BOOMING! SPECIAL PURCHASE NEW CAVALIERS school has the largest 4A enrollment in the state; Lawrence North one of the smallest in 5A.

If the IHSAA realigned the classes now, the Flashes undoubtedly would be 5A and the Wildcats 4A. "That'd be fine with me," quipped Lawrence North coach Doug Reeser. "They are probably the best team in the state. "Maybe the way to look at it is the 5A teams are lucky Franklin Central is in 4A." Reeser feels his Wildcats are going to have to play a flawless game against the Flashes. "I think they hope we pull this off because it creates a different definition of the Indy race," Andy Shlenker, president of Denver Grand Prix, said after a news conference held in Denver's Civic Center Park where By NANCY BURKHART ASSOCIATED PRESS Denver Championship Auto Racing Teams, Inc. on Thursday gave the Denver Grand Prix formal permission to hold its inaugural lndy-car race next Aug. 24-26, with an accompanying entertainment plan race officials said is unequaled by other CART races. "If we do this well, it's going to open up new markets," he said.

Plans call for a festival to accompany the lndy-car race, held on a 1.9-mile circuit through the streets of Denver at speeds up to 180 mph, including concerts Friday and Saturday nights, food booths and exhibits, a charity ball and golf tournament. "This is not just racing," Shlenker said. "John Q. Public can come out and have a good time at the race." CART officials also are looking with interest at the Denver Grand Prix plan for added activities to draw people who aren't necessarily race enthusiasts. "This moves racing as an entertainment entity to the next step," said Mel Poole, CART'S director of communications.

CART president and CEO John Caponigro on Thursday confirmed reports that the Pocono International Race's 500-mile competition would be removed from the CART schedule next season. Indy-car drivers have complained of poor surface and safety conditions at the track. But Caponigro said Denver wasn't added to CART ranks as a replacement for the Pocono 500. "We were prepared to go for this race before considering (the DISCOUNTS on all nplactmtnt jobs installed by us. ANDERSEN PATIO DOOR PSW 510 Minimum problems at) Pocono," Caponigro said.

Mario Andretti, the Indy car drivers' representative on CART's board of directors, said last month before the Pocono 500 that racers won't compete there next year unless repairs are made. Andretti on Thursday seemed enthusiastic about Denver's street track, calling it an "extremely interesting and challenging" course. "This (Denver) falls Into the category of several other street courses," he said. Denver Joins Cleveland, Ohio, Meadowlands in East Rutherford, N.J., Detroit and Long Beach, with temporary road courses for CART's Indy-car races which feature such famous drivers as Aspen resident Danny Sullivan, Andretti and his son, Michael, and this year's CART-PPG leader, Emerson Fittipaldi. Sports Car Club of America, an Englewood-based organization, will sponsor support races for the Denver Grand Prix.

A Trans Am championship already is booked, and discussions are under way for one more race, Shlenker said. The ABC television network will broadcast the Indy car race live on Sunday, while other programming will be handled by Nickelodeon, MTV. the Nashville Network and the Colorado-based Prime Network, which is owned by Telecommunications Inc. and Denver cable magnate Bill Daniels. Daniels also is a partner In Denver Grand Prix.

Shlenker has projected the race will generate as much as $30 million annually for Denver's economy.
