J4 4 4 IB PRINCETON DAILY CLARION TUESDAY NOVEMBER 1 2005 SPORTS Pacers ready eager for regular season to begin INDIANAPOLIS (AP) The Indi ana Pacers are tired of talking about the brawl tired of speculating on basketball without Reggie tired of wondering whether Ron Artest will behave tired of playing meaningless games ready and eager for the new NBA season to begin year is kind of a blur because I really remember Jermaine said after practice Monday year our goals are to play as good as possible play togeth er and put ourselves in a great posi tion for (the playoff finals in) Those also were goals last year until the brawl with Detroit fans led to lengthy suspensions of Artest and Stephen Jackson The Pacers still managed a 44 38 record but lost to the Pistons in the Eastern Conference semifinals The new seasonwith Artest back but Reggie Miller retired begins Wednesday night at Orlando year even a thought any just another year for us and a bigger year Per sonally I think the Pacers have ever had a team like this as far as tai ent wise One thing we have this year to go with the talent is we have the mental toughness going to take us over the Besides Miller the Pacers also lost Dale Davis through free agency and James Jones through a trade But they added first round draft pick Danny Granger veteran Samaki Walker and sharpshooter Saninas Jasikevicius a 29 year old NBA rook ie who played the past five years in Europe some ways I think in great shape in other ways we have work to Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said sure every coach in the league would say that Every team is Kina ot a work progress even though had a month to The second game will be on Thursday night at Miami one of the other top picks this season in the East before their home opener Sat urday night against Philadelphia The biggest problem for Indiana so far has been injuries to some of the big men Jeff oster the starter most of last season is still bothered by a sore tendon and may remain out several more weeks David Harrison is back in the rota tion but Scot Pollard is still ques tionable and may not be ready for the opener In the meantime also is fill ing in at center those guys in there we be 100 percent said we feel like we can win games pretty much against anybody and if we play hard and together for those 48 minutes we should come back (from the opening road trip) 2 0" Carlisle said the Pacers talk about last turmoil talk about a lot of he said talk about playing with aggression and poise about playing hard and smart and all that but an extended discussion about what hap pened last year necessary should be one of the better teams but we know we have to go out and prove it every Carlisle said Jackson said the eagerness to begin the season has nothing to do with atonement for last year tired of beating each other up in practice tired of playing games that he said definitely ready to go Obvi ously we still have stuff to work on not completely healthy But we have a great group of guys ready to go to get the job Purdue suspends player charged with drunken driving SPORTS DIGEST Smith: Michigan St can't take Purdue losing streak for granted after Visit
