-THE INDIANAPOLIS STAR- SUNDAY, AUGUST 20, 1989 B-5 Pocono should be forgotten ATTN: CAR PHONE BUYERS CELLULAR SYSTEMS INC. OWN A NEW GTE Classic CAR PHONE for only fixed or No, all they're asking is to have a track which won't shake the cars and drivers to pieces. Daly is fearful of the ramifications of a major accident. "I hope there isn't another list of people with a limp, or unable to walk or not be around to walk because of this place," Daly continued. "I wonder if a hungry lawyer would have a good negligence suit If someone gets killed.

"We know It's dangerous, we know it's rough, we know there are too many punctures. If something happened, they could point out that they knew it would happen and something should have been done about it. "Until another 500 or a su-perspeedway comes along to re $37900 'New activation and 1 year Agreement required while CSI North 317-844-3866 CSI South 317-787-8229 Castleton Square Mall 317-841-1006 Anderson 317-644-5410 Bloomington 812-331-2355 place Pocono, I don't see CART dropping this race." Yet another suggestion: Find a place to replace Pocono. Although Indy-car races at Atlanta were failures. Charlotte Motor Speedway, which hosts both NASCAR and IMSA events, might be a viable alternative, at least until they build somewhere like Albuquerque or Palm Springs, where superspeedways are being considered.

But maybe the best that could happen would be that they finally fix up Pocono. As Daly pointed out. it does have some tradition. And were it not for the roughness, it very well might be the favorite oval track for all of the drivers. If they don't fix it up to make it safer, CART should drop it plain and simple as that.

When practice opened Thursday for today's Quaker State 500 at Pocono International Raceway. CART pit notes offered this observation: "2:02 p.m.

Yellow flag for debris on the track." That pretty much sums up a weekend of racing at PIR. The 2'2-mile tri-oval in this mountainous area near Long Pond, is a rough affair. The pavement is rough and uneven. Everywhere one looks, there are black streaks where cracks have been patched. Surrounding the track is a red and white boiler plate wall.

There are rust shavings from said wall. The rough pavement shakes parts loose from race cars. There are other objects on the track, such as nails. All cause punctures which some-, times cause accidents. In many places, the boiler plate wall is uneven with jagged edges that could act as a saw -were car to hit it in the right place.

The rough surface also causes suspension failures which can cause accidents. And every year, there are the same complaints about the facility. Some drivers are more openly vocal about the situation than others. All agree there is concern. "They are preserving history here, not just the race," observed Derek Daly.

"The Pocono 500 is a known name and I think CART is conscious of the public reaction to street circuits. That's everything against not coming back here in the future. "Unfortunately, the cars have outgrown this circuit. Michael Greenfield's accident is an example of how the boiler plate wall sliced off the front of his car." Here's a suggestion: Replace the boiler plate wall with a concrete wall. Someone even suggested that the boiler plate wall could serve as form for the concrete and then remain as a support.

It's an expensive idea, but a good one. CART Continued from Page 1 chassis have really been respon-, sible for saving a lot of skin. We've got to go with It and I can't believe anyone with a conscience would not endorse the agreement. "To say that the new rules will obsolete the old cars is hog-wash. There's no guarantee an old car would be competitive with a new car even if the rules stayed the same.

The new rules wouldn't create any more hardship than If the rules had stayed the same." ALTHOUGH THE cars of Dale Coyne and Tony Bettenhausen were in line to qualify, only Gurney wins FROM STAR WIRE SERVICES Springfield, 111. Chuck Gurney posted a dominating victory In Saturday's Tony Bettenhausen 100 at the Illnois State Fairgrounds. The Livermore, Cal. veteran led all but eight laps of the Val-volineUSAC Silver Crown Championship race over the 1-mile dirt track. Johnny Parsons and Larry Rice, both of Browns-burg, finished second and third respectively.

The win was Chuck's third in the Bettenhausen 100, having won in 1984 and 1985. rou mat wlfy for this pun 1 imlMmmMmmm.mMJM0 wtl Vyf ONE HOUR TIRE CHANGE! Our Lowest Priced! A Goodyear spokesman said that so far there have been the usual number of punctures. The culprit is debris. Ask Scott Pruett, who will start his first Pocono 500 today, about the debris at PIR. "We've cut seven tires this weekend and one was caused by a nail," said Pruett. "Steve Home (team director of True- sports Racing which employs Pruett) walked around the track and came back with a handful of junk.

"Here we are, talking about speeds of 200 to 220 and if you lose a tire, it could be potentially dangerous. Here's another suggestion: Clean the track better or find about 20 Steve Homes to comb the track by hand. Ironically, the drivers like Po- cono as a circuit. From Rick Mears to Emerson Fittipaldl to Bobby Rahal to Daly to Pruett. they all describe It as "beauti ful." PIR does offer the biggest challenge among the super-speedways on the CARTPPG circuit.

Mears likens Turn 1 to Michigan, Turn 2 to Indianapolis and Turn 3 to Milwaukee. The word "compromise" gets used a lot when drivers talk about set ting up their cars. And despite the grumbling over PIR's shortcomings, one gets the feeling they want to keep coming back. That is, if PIR repaves its surface and replaces its walls. "This is actually my favorite oval," said Rahal: "But they need some capital Improvements.

Nobody Is asking anyone to go into bankruptcy." Coyne was able to get out onto the track to make a qualification try and that run was cut short by a misting rain which ultimately cancelled Saturdays on-track activities. However, Bettenhausen and Coyne drew for position and will start 26th and 27th, respectively. Earlier in the day, a total of 22 cars participated in a practice session with Rick Mears and teammate Al Unser setting the pace. Mears, who will start alongside polesitter Emerson Fittipaldl, had the day's top lap of 202.575 miles per hour in the Pennzoil PC-18Chevy. Unser was right behind at 202.479 in the Marlboro PC-18Chevy.

Third quickest Saturday was Bobby Rahal in the Kraco Lola-Cosworth and at 201.347, the defending race winner was the only other man to top the 200 mph mark. USAC race Ron Dunstan of Coplay, Pa. and Steve Butler of Kokomo. Ind. rounded out the first five.

Gurney, who out-qualified Parsons by half-a-second for the pole position in the 30-car field, was out in front except for Laps 30-37. when Parsons took over. Gurney's win boosted him to a five-point lead over Gary Bettenhausen in the USAC standings going Into next Sunday night's 37th "Hoosier Hundred." Dave Feese of Saybrook, III. and George Snider of Bakers-field, Cal. won the two 12-mile preliminary qualifying races.
