The Taos News PUBLISHED EACH TUESDAY AND THURSDAY THE THURSDAY EDITION No. 397 Eggs FISHERMEN brave the chilly waters of a high-country lake near Taos, dangly ing their bait for the elusive native trout which abound in all the near-by rough country lakes. GAME OFFICIALS collected native trout eggs from Latir Lake recently for 5 trasferral to Red River Hatchery where they can hatch out and grow under ideal conditions.

When hatched and grown, the fish will be planted in regional I lakes. GOOSE LAKE native trout were recently transferred from their natural surroundings to be placed in another high-country lake in the Taos area. Department of Game and Fish officials transferred the fish after catching them recently. To Make Better Fishing The State Department of Game and Fish has completed transferring native trout eggs from their natural habitat at Latir-Lake to the Red River Hatchery, according to Carl Berghofer, game warden. Berghofer stated that by transferring the eggs from their natural spawning area to a hatchery with ideal surroundings, they can hatch up to 95 per cent of the native trout.

If the eggs are left in their natural surroundings, less than 5 per cent of the eggs will grow to fingerling size. This is because the eggs are harmed by fluctuations in the water level and by fishermen fishing in the area. The eggs are transferred annually alter the spawning season to the hatchery where they are hatched out under ideal condi- tioas. When the fish hatch and grow to planting size, they are taken from the hatchery and planted in surrounding lakes and streams. Berghofer stated that the Game and Fish Department can get rainbow trout eggs from commercial lakes and hatcheries, but that it has to gather eggs from heir natural surroundings in order to get native trout.

The Department of Game and Fish has gathered a total of 217,200 eggs from the lake this year. In 1965, they gathered 183,000 and in 1964, they transplanted 196,000 to the hatcheries. The Game department will put 70,000 native trout back into regional lakes and streams and 50,000 will go to Seven Springs for further distribution. TAGS, NEW MEXICO, THURSDAY, JUNE 30. 1966 Doctors Consider Medicare 10 WELCOME, TOURISTS It has been noted that each year the rain accompanies the tourists to Taos; and with the rain, too, comes a condition called "potholeitis." The above photograph demonstrates the tourist view of potholeitis; or, as one visitor said, "You have a lovely town, but (Taos News photo) The Taos County Medical Society, looking to the beginning of the Medicare program which will begin Friday, has issued the following statement concerning procedure for patients: "With the advent of Medicare, one more program has been added which involves a third party in the payment of some or all of your medical expenses.

This has led to a large number fee schedules and various forms to be filled out. We feel it advisable at this point to clarify the manner in which we can best handle the problem and still deal with our patients as re- sponsible individuals, capable of i evaluating their own medical needs and paying their bills. 1 "We feel that ail patients should be given the opportunity to handle their own affairs. As doctors, we provide certain services for certain fees. Our arrangement is with the patient.

We are not concerned with how i he gets the money to pay his i bills. We are, however, glad to furnish on our own forms, necessary information and itemization, so that the patient may be reimbursed by his insurance carrier, government agency or other.
