M. 'Shorty 1 Long SWEENY Funeral services are scheduled Monday for Vernon Marion "Shorty" Long, 74, longtime Sweeny grocer, who died Saturday (Feb. 19, 1977) at Sweeny Community Hospital. Long had operated a grocery at 807 Main St. Sweeny since his retirement from Abercrombie Oil Co.

He came to Sweeny to work in the Abercrombie refinery in 1938. He was a member of Old Ocean Masonic Lodge 1284 AM and was a past master of both the Old Ocean and Brazoria Lodge 327. He was a 32nd Degree Mason of the Houston Scottish Rite Temple and was a charter member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Sweeny Chapter 873. Long was also past patron of Sweeny and Brazoria chapters of the Eastern Star. He was a member of the First Baptisl Church of Sweeny.

Funeral services will be held at the First Baptist Church at 11 a.m. Monday with the Rev. Frank Biles, pastor, and the Rev. Charles Chance of Houston, former pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Sweeny Cemetery under the direction of Sweeny Funeral Home.

Survivors Include his wife, Luciel Moore Friday Long of Sweeny, a son, Howard Wayne Long of Dickinson; a daughter, Mrs. Faye EileeaPetligrew of Sweeny; Iwo brothers, Horace Long of Houston and Earnest Long of Corsicana.
