The measles outbreak has been traced to the park. "It's tragic to see measles making a resurgence," said Deanne Thompson, a spokeswoman for the Orange County Health Care Agency.

"When our immunity falls, it creates a problem for the whole community." While all states require certain vaccinations for schoolchildren, parents in California can opt out if they sign a personal belief waiver. There are some wealthy communities in Los Angeles and Orange counties and in Northern California with double-digit vaccination exemption rates. To control this latest outbreak, those who are not vaccinated were warned this week to stay away from Disney theme parks. Disney employees who have no proof of immunization and may have come into contact with sick colleagues were placed on paid leave until they are given the medical all-clear. At Huntington Beach High School in Orange County, two dozen unvaccinated students were ordered home until the three-week incubation period is up.

More than 30 babies in Northern California's Alameda County have been placed in home isolation after possible exposure. "I'm terribly upset that someone has made a choice that not only affects their child but other people's children," said Jennifer Simon, whose 6-month-old daughter, Livia, was isolated after it was learned she may have been exposed to measles during a visit to the doctor's office. i By Alicia Chang Associated Press LOS ANGELES A major measles outbreak traced to Disneyland has brought criticism down on the small but vocal movement among parents to opt out of vaccinations for their children. In a rash of cases that public health officials are rushing to contain, at least 70 people in six states and Mexico have fallen ill since mid-December, most of them from California. The vast majority of those who got sick had not gotten the measles-mumps-rubella, or MMR, vaccine.

While still a scourge in many corners of the world, measles has been all but eradicated in the U.S. since 2000 because of vaccinations. But the virus has made a comeback in recent years, in part because of people obtaining personal belief exemptions from rules that say children must get their shots to enroll in school. Others have delayed getting their children vaccinated because they still believe now-discredited research linking the measles vaccine to autism. "Some people are just incredibly selfish" by skipping shots, said Dr.

James Cherry, a pediatric disease expert at the University of California, Los Angeles. As cases mount, several newspapers have criticized the anti-vaccine movement. Measles "is a disease that has been beaten by modern medicine. That makes it all the more frustrating that anti-science stubbornness has proven, in the case of the Disneyland-related measles, that when it comes to contagious diseases, it's a small world after all," the him. He was a longtime hospital administrator of both Seaway and Lynn Hospitals and a devoted member of the Allen Park Presbyterian Church.

Barbara Loe Fisher, director of the National Vaccine Information Center, a Virginia-based nonprofit that favors letting parents decide whether to vaccinate, said, "I don't think it's wise or responsible to blame" unvaccinated people for the Disney outbreak. She noted that a small number of those stricken had been fully vaccinated.

Health authorities believe the outbreak was triggered by a measles-stricken visitor to one of the Disney parks who brought the virus from abroad last month. As one of the world's biggest tourist destinations, Disney was a perfect spot for the virus to spread, with large numbers of babies too young to be vaccinated and lots of visitors from countries that do not require measles shots. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS QUESTION: What is the measles? ANSWER: It's a rash illness that can be fatal. Who gets measles? Anyone who has not had measles before and who has not been vaccinated is susceptible.

What are the symptoms? Hard dry cough, sneezing or runny nose, watery or red eyes, fever, rash of red bumps that starts on face and spreads, tiny white spots on the inner cheeks and gums. What's the time frame? Cough, runny nose, watery eyes, and fever usually begin 10-12 days after exposure. The rash usually appears four days later. How is the disease spread? By droplets from the nose and mouth through sneezing, coughing and speaking; occurs mainly in late winter and early spring. Are there complications? Otitis media (ear infection) or pneumonia can result from measles.

During pregnancy, measles may cause the loss of the unborn baby. Death is rare. What's the treatment? Bed rest is advised until at least four days after the rash appears, to avoid spreading the illness, but there is no specific treatment. How can measles be prevented? Getting vaccinated. Physicians advise parents of healthy children to have them vaccinated at 12 to 15 months of age, with the combination shot for measles, mumps and rubella (MMR).

A second dose is given between 4 and 6 years old. What about adults? Those born in 1957 or later should receive at least one dose of MMR vaccine unless they have other acceptable evidence of immunity. But pregnant women should not get vaccinated. Women of childbearing age should not be in contact with those who have measles. Source: Oakland County Health Division.

First case of 2015 diagnosed in Oakland County FROM PAGE 3A etc." should be seen by a doctor to check for measles. In Oakland County, health officials extended weekend hours; people can call a nurse to ask questions at 800-848-5533, ext. 1, 11 a.m.-3 p.m. today and Sunday. Or, they can visit the immunization clinic at the county complex, on the border of Pontiac and Waterford Township, on Saturday or Sunday (11 a.m.-3 p.m., both days), at 1200 N.

Telegraph, Building 34E. Vaccinations at the county office cost $56, with most insurances accepted; and many children quality for free vaccinations, county officials said. Throughout Michigan, many parents request vaccination waivers for their children entering kindergarten, asking to opt out of getting their kids the MMR vaccine (measles-mumps-rubella) for religious or philosophical reasons, said Kathy Forzley, health officer with the Oakland County Health Division. January 14, 2015. Jim was devoted to his family and loved making and keeping friends; be those old friends from grade school or new friends with his nurses and doctors. His inborn likeability and love of others made him a natural salesman. This contributed to the success of the underground irrigation business he started in the 1960s. His youthful vitality saw him setting, and achieving goals throughout his life.

He loved working with stained glass and gifting his creations to friends and family. Jim enjoyed physical activity and sports such as tennis, golf, pickle ball, skiing, ice skating, biking, and was blessed to have been able to enjoy many of these into his 80's. Jim also enjoyed watching baseball, hockey, and football, especially if his beloved MSU Spartans were in the game. In testament to his fierce loyalty and mischievous, good-natured manner, he'd engage in defending his college against slights from those loyal to the "other Michigan college" which shall respectfully remain unnamed. One of his last joys was State's victory over Baylor in the Cotton Bowl.

Jim had a very strong spirit and will to live. Through his faith in the Lord, Jim overcame the loss of his three sons. Jimmy in 1 970, Bob in 2001 and John in 201 a mere three days after the loss of Etta, his wife of 60 years. Some called him the Viking of the family for his amazing strength in the face of those losses. Jim knew he'd be reunited in heaven with his family and looked forward to sitting down and cracking a Bud with his sons; assured that in heaven beer has no expiration date.

He was very proud of his Irish heritage and, having married a 100 Scottish woman, enjoyed many years of playful banter purporting the superiority of the Irish. He was also proud of his service as a Captain in U.S.A.F. Intelligence during the Korean War. He will be missed and fondly remembered by his grandson, Ian Redmond; daughters-in-law, Judi (the late John) Redmond and Kelly (the late Bob); step-grandchildren, Kara and Kyle Roche; sister-in-law, Joan Mackenzie; brother-in-law, Alex (Joan) Mackenzie; nieces, Margie Williams, Lynn (Kevin) Fry, Sandy (Bill) Schmidt, Jill Mackenzie-Jenkins; nephew, Dave Mackenzie; and many other family and friends. Schwartz Oltarz-Schwartz P.C. filed a lawsuit in April 2014, alleging it's owed $6,234.75. In a lawsuit filed in September 2014, Hamood alleges Baker gave him two checks total.
