Michigan.comDeathNotices By Eric D. Lawrence Detroit Free Press Writer After months of anticipation and dread, drivers in metro Detroit on Saturday got their first taste of life without access to a 7-mile stretch of 1-96 in Redford Township and Livonia.

And according to Rob Moro-si, a spokesman for the Michigan Department of Transportation, everything went as planned for the beginning of the closure that should last until October while the road is rebuilt between Telegraph and Newburgh roads. Residents requested that the entire stretch of road be reconstructed in one season, rather than deal with lane closures for several years. "No major hiccups," Morosi said of the road closure, which was fully in effect before 8 a.m. Crews had begun closing ramps in the area about 7 p.m. Friday.

In addition to the highway closure, the left lanes of the service drives are closed, too. Sylvia Hayes, who lives on SEE A MAP OF DETOUR ROUTES San Jose in Redford Township north of 1-96, took her dog for a walk Saturday morning and had no problem going her usual route, crossing over the interstate four times. Traffic was moving freely on major roadways near the highway, she said shortly after 5 p.m. "It looks like a really smooth start-up." Morosi said the real test will come early this week as commuters tackle their new routes for the first time. The road usually handles 70,000 vehicles per day.

"Saturday is just really not an indication. We anticipate delays on the alternate routes come Monday morning," he said. For information about the closure and alternate routes, go to www.96fix.com. Contact Eric D. Lawrence: elawrencefreepress.com Celebrate your loved one'd life.
