THURSDAY, JULY 10, 2014 WWW.FREEP.COM 13A Artvest's list of DIA's most valuable art 4: "Cotopaxi" Armchair" 5: "Bank of the Oise at Auvers" By Mark Stryker Detroit Free Press Staff Writer Artvest Partners evaluated 57,604 works of art at the DIA. Here are the 12 most expensive from the report released Wednesday, each carrying a high estimate of at least $35 million. Where available, works are accompanied by evaluator comments. These works do not include the 2,800 pieces bought with city funds that were appraised last year by Christie's. Because the works evaluated by Artvest were either donated to the museum or bought with some combination of private or restricted funds, they are surrounded by more legal protections from sale than the city-bought pieces evaluated by Christie's.

The DIA's iconic Diego Rivera murals are not priced because they are frescoes, impossible to remove from the walls. Between the two evaluations, the two most valuable works were included in the Christie's report: Bruegel the Elder's 16th-century painting "The Wedding Dance" (worth as much as $200 million) and Van Gogh's 1887 self-portrait (worth as much as $150 million). The 12 most valuable pieces appraised in the Artvest report: 1. Vincent Van Gogh, "Portrait of Postman Roulin." Oil on canvas. 1888.

2. Pablo Picasso, "Melancholy Woman." Oil on canvas. 1902. 3. Pablo Picasso, "Woman Seated in an Armchair." Oil on canvas.
