Engineering work is already under way in connection with plana for a new plant to be built by the Midwest Steel Corporation on a acre tract bordering Lake Michigan east of Gary. officials of the concern said here today. "The plant will include blast fur-naces, complete steel plant and fin- ishing mill and will embody latest developments in modern steel mill construction," according to E. T. Weir, chairman of Midwest as well as the National Steel Corporation, of which Midwest is a subsidiary. Millions Are Involved. The new plant will represent an in- vestment of $40,000,000 to $50,000,000 and its products will include semi- finished steel, rails, structural shapes, plates and sheets.

The plant site is expected to bo increased 1,000 acres later through reclamation work. Other subsidi-aries of National Steel are the Wie.r-ton Steel Company, Wierton, W. and Great Lakes Steel Corporation, Detroit, Mich. GRADING, RECLAIMING. Special to The Indianapolis alar.

GARY, June 2. Reports, that the Midwest Steel Corporation would begin preliminary work on its acre site on Lake Michigan in prep- aration for a $10,000,000 industrial building program were received hers tonight. i Information from officials indicates the work of grading and reclaiming the large area in the Dunfs country near the Burns ditch will begin this fall, but that actual construction on buildings will not be started for at least two years. The Midwest Steel Corporation few days ago filed papers as an Indi- ana corporation in order to carry out its projected program. H.

H. WINSLOW, 64, PLAYWRIGHT, DIES HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, N. June 2. OP) Herbert Hall Winslow, 64 years old, author of fifty-six plays, of which eighteen were pro- duced on Broadway, died unexpect- i edly last night from a clot on the brain. Born in Keokuk, Mr.

Winslow began writing at the age of 14 and before he came East was city editor of the Keokuk Constitution. In 1885 he edited his own magazine, Wins-low's Monthly. For the last two years he had been screen critic of the Yonkers (N. Statesman, Among his plays were "What's Your Wife Doing?" written in collaboration With Emil Nyitray and produced by Arthur Klein in 1923 "The Vinegar Buyer," "Well Elegant Jones," "Down in Injianny," "The Great Northwest," "The Spell-' binder," Little "The Southerner" and "A Rolling Stone." Ross Jr. and Edward Kegeris. ITALIAN AVIATION IDOL SETS NEW AIR RECORD MONTE CELIO, Italy, June 2. Mat. Umberto Maddalena, hero of the relief of Gen.

Umberto Nobile and the Italia, today became the aviation idol of Italy anew by establishing a new sustained nonrefueling airplans flight record. Maj. Maddalena and his companion Lieut. Fausto Cecconi covered 8,350 kilometers (5,218 miles) of which. 8,200 kilometers (5,125 miles) stand as the world record.

Maj. Maddalena wrested the endurance record from Germany and the record for distance in a closed circuit from France. Hs flew over land and sea and was sixty-seven hours in the air. Maj. Maddalena said his record flight was essentially a preparation for his proposed attempt to fly to New York, in the same plane, later this year.

Four Indianlans are among ninety-seven stud.nts of the army's advanced flying school, Kelly field, to receive thair wings at graduation exercises June 21. The list of prospective graduates as announced today includes ths names of Robert J. Hixon, Green-castle; Charles -T. Maxwell and William R.

White, Indianapolis, and Robert Doolittle, South Bend. In addition to the cadets the class includes an officer graduate in the person of Lieut. Edward H. White of Fort Wayne. Most of the cadets have signified their desire to accept active duty under their air corps reserve commissions.

Two Jay County Bankers Held for Embezzlement Special to The Indianapolis Star. PORTLAND, June 2. Thomas W. Shimp, president of tha Jay County Savings Trust Company, and Roscoe D. Wheat, vice president, were arrested today on a grand jury indictment charging banker's embezzlement.

They are charged with having received deposits for the bank after they knew it was insolvent. They were released under bond of $2,000. Wheat is a former judge of the Jay Circuit court. The Jay County Savings Trust Company was closed a few weeks ago after the defalcations of Clyde D. Bechdolt, cashier, amounting to $100,000 or more, became known.
