THE TERRE HAUTE STAB, MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 1961. 11 'Count Crash' Went Without Lady Luck Riding as Co-Pilot MONZA, Italy, Sept. Wolfgang Berghe von Trips, the scion of a German noble family in the Rhineland, was involved in so many accidents as a driver that he was called "Count Crash" on the racing circuit. Somehow he always managed to survive despite serious injuries in several crackups. Twice he was badly injured in smashups in 1956 and 1958 on the same Monza circuit where he crashed to his death today.

Today Lady Luck deserted him THE DASHING blond count started his racing career 10 years ago in cross country motorcycling. This year, he had set his eyes on the world championship. And many were certain he would be the first German ever to get the title. Although he came from a well- to-do family the count earned his laurels the hard way nevertheless. His parents did not think much his early motoring ambitions.

And the engine of a Porsche in which he placed second in the first car race of his life in 1954 was paid for out of the prize money. In a few years, he came Germany's number one racing driver and the idol of many thousands, some of whom had never seen a track. In 1958. he won the European mountain championship on Porsche. The year, he switched to Ferrari, quickly gaining more international honors.

When rain flooded the tracks, he was at its best. BETWEEN RACES, he returned to the moated family castle at Horrem near Cologne. He had studied to become a farmer and he relaxed by raising flowers on the parental estate. In the 1961 season. Trips soon built up a fine points lead.

He won the Grand Prix races at Aintree and Zandvoort. captured two second places and one fourth. The Monza race could have given him the title. "I will try my best as always," the Count told an interviewer a few days ago. "But if it doesn't work there is nothing you can do about it.

Certainly Monza will not be a matter of life or death. After all we are sportsmen." He meant that even though he was leading in the world championship he did not think a defeat would be a tragedy. And then he added: "I know what people expect from me and I feel the weight of additional responsibility. Sometimes you want the best but then fail because of a trifle." BRAZIL ZEPHYRS HALVE TWIN BILL BRAZZIL, Sept. (Special.) Indianapolis Mallory and the Brazil Zephyrs split a doubleheader here this afternoon, the Capital City team taking the first game, 9 to 7.

and the Zephyrs the nightcap. 6 to 2. Bill Bright, a onetime pitcher in the Philadelphia Phillies' organization, out pitched Charlie Hall and Bugs Trout in the first game. The Zephyrs outhit Mallory, getting nine safeties off Bright's pitching, but three errors hurt the local club. Ed Marvel and Trout handled the pitching for the Zephyrs in the second game and combined to hold the Indianapolis team to six hits while the Zephyrs again got nine hits.

Jim Buell laced a triple and two singles and Harlan Lautenschlager hit a triple and single for the Zephyrs in the first game. WEATHER FORECAST Scattered showers and thundershowers are forecast this afternoon for the Mississippi Valley, the east Gulf Coast and western portion of the central Plains. Occasional rain is due in the west Gulf coast and the central Plains. Continued hot and humid weather is expected for the north Atlantic states and the Ohio Valley. Slightly warmer temperatures are predicted for Montana and Utah with cooler weather in the northern and central Plains and upper Mississippi Valley.

Canada's top power- boat driver, was killed today in an accident during the Silver Cup regatta on the Detroit River. Hayward, 33 years old, from Embro, Ontario, was driving Miss Supertest II into the first turn of the second heat when his boat flipped over. He was rushed to Detroit Receiving Hospital and was dead on arrival. Doctors said he died of a broken neck. Hayward had driven Canada's Harmsworth trophy champion, Miss Supertest III, to victory the last three years in the international race.

Hayward remained in his boat after the flip but was knocked out. He was taken to the pit area where doctors put him under a rasuscitator before he was removed to the hospital. Jim Thompson, owner of Miss Supertest. said "I saw the whole thing. Bob had just gone into the first leg when lie made a complete rollover." The remainder of the race was cancelled because of Hayward's death.

of the first heat, which was run in two seconds, were Seattle's Miss Bardahl and Detroit's Such Crust. Miss Bardahl, driven by Ron Musson. averaged 108.089 for its 15 miles. Such Crust, driven by Fred Alter, averaged 98.084. Hayward was disqualified in the first heat because Miss Supertest II struck a buoy.

Hayward volunteered the information that he hit the buoy when officials apparently missed the action. Hayward was an ex-chicken farmer before he first became a mechanic and later a driver for the Supertest boats.
