Pete is St. Onc-Lcggcd Purple Hcarters Challenge Girls' Net Teams Temple, Feb. 27 UF The McCloskey Purple Hearters, one of the most unusual basketball teams of all time, challenge any team in the world if they're girls. Undefeated thus far and victors over WACs, nurses and cadet nurses, the boys are feeling their oats. "We would like to play any girls' team in the nation," says Allen Monts, Charleston, 111., team captain.

THE RF.ASOV the Purple Hearters limit the opposition to females is that each of the 18 players has an artificial leg, the result of battle wounds In World War H. They are at McCloskey General Hospital here. Because the majority of the boys have had their artificial limbs for only a short time, and consequently cannot get around with the agility that comes only with constant practice, the Pur ple Hearters use a six-man team Concluded From Tags 1 a contract signed yesterday calls for installation of an entirely new -public address system at the oval. I Commenting that he had lenrned only recently that thousands left the track in past years without knowing exactly how cars finished, Mr. Shaw said: "We mean to take every step to give guests and customers a better toss this year than they've ever had before." IN COMING to Indianapolis to drive the 1946 pace car, Henry i Ford II follows a family preced- ent established by his grandfather, Henry Ford, in 1924.

The Jatter in that year served as ref-" eree of the race won Jointly by L. L. Corum and Joe Boyer. The late Edsel Ford, father of the present Henry Ford II, served -as hoth referee and pacemaker in 1932. when Fred Frame estai liished a new track record wilh an average of 104.144 M.P.H.

In 1933, Edsel Ford set the pace for a second time in a race won hy Kelly Petillo with an average Speed of 103.240 M.P.H. The pace car leads the 33 fast est qualifiers, aligned in 11 rows Of three cars each, for one com plete circuit of the oval. As the home stretch rears, Henry Ford II step up the speed to 90 miles an hour. THE ENT1RK field crosses the 'starting line at full throttle, with the pace car pulling to the left and onto the safety apron In front of the pits. Then, for four hours, the famed Indianapolis race will be on for the iirst time 1941.

Mr. Shaw said yesterday he ex-pects an entry field of approximately 50 drivers, although only will he permitted to compete. Drivers believe that an average speed of 120 miles an hour will be necessary to win. The present record of 117.2 M.P.H. was set in 1938.
