BLAINE PATTON Sports Editor The Star Churchill Downs, Louisville, April 30 The Derby trial, a dash of a mile over a sloppy track here today with 10 contenders in the going for the $100,000 pot of gold Saturday, practically eliminated eight of the number if the footing Is slippery. This prelude for $100,000 proved to be a two-horse race as between the fast clod-throwing William Helis's Rippey and Spy Song. Spy Song led from the opening of the starting gate until the last Jive jumps before the finish with Rippey in close pursuit at his flank on the outside. They called It a photo finish, but it was easy to see that Helis's bay colt had grabbed firs place in that driving last furlong. Trailing by four and one-half lengths in third place was With Pleasure, a' neck ahead of Assault, and the remainder of the field far behind, trailing in the order of Alamond, Marine Victory, Double Slam, Wee Admiral and Menever last.

BY WINNING in the fast time of 1:4015 in mud, Rippey paid his $2 mutual bakers $7.60 to win, $4.20 to place and $3.60 for showing. Spy Song's price was $3.80 for place and $3.60 for show, while With Pleasure paid $9.60 on the show end. The Kentucky Derby, billed for Saturday, has many sterling thoroughbreds which did not race in the Trial today, but this far In advance the advise of this writer is not to overlook today's winner and his neck runner-up. Going to the post today, Spy Song was the favorite, Rippey next, with Assault more or less a favorite in the mud at 9 to 2 and With Pleasure, winner of third, a long shot at 40 to 1. Derby Day Gossip THERE MILL BE no reason to go hungry if you attend the Kentucky Derby Saturday.

14 i 5 6 33 'a; 14 '4 6'Z 5 I The entry of another foreign car and driver added spice to an already internationally flavored entry list for the Memorial Day classic. The entries now number 45. Speedway officials announced the entry of a 12-cylinder, rear-wheel-drive a go a Special, which will be driven by Robert M. W. Arbunoth, a leading British sportsman and racing enthusiast.

The car was entered by High Speed Motors, of Paddington, England. Indiana speed fans look to George Barringer, veteran of five Speedway grinds, as one Hoosier driver likely to uphold the state's prestige in the Memorial Day classic race this year. George, an Indianapolis resident for 10 years, will drive one of the most unusual cars entered. It Is a six-cylinder, supercharged, four-wheel drive "job" with the engine in the rear. The piston displacement is 180 cubic inches.

Roscoe Dunning, also a dyed-in-the-wool Hoosier, Is mechanic and adviser for George. Roscoe has been connected with the race in various capacities since 1911, and has been mechanic for most of the "hig name" drivers. George's car, practically destroyed in a fire which swept. Gasoline Alley a few hours before the 1941 race, was rebuilt this winter. He qualified the car at 122.29 M.P.H.

in 1941, the 14th fastest time. Since then it has been "souped up" and George promises one of the fastest qualifications ever seen. S. A. Sllbermann, metallurgical engineer, known lo the motor rac ne fraternity as me A-m man, has completed plans testing all vitBl car parts for this year as in the past.

Silbermann is the official testing engineer for the AAA con-tost board, which first established the system in 1935 to prevent accidents due to faulty metal in car parts. Drivers, mechanicians and sponsors resented this innovation when more than 50 per cent of parts subject to terrific stress were found defective and rejected. The following year this feeling changed and the drivers realized that the so-called "X-ray" Insnpption was preventing acci dents. By 1941 the rejection nans had dronned 2 per cent of of all those examined. Sibermann works for "free" end likes it, calling it a "vacation." But it usually requires a two-week fishing trip in June to recover from the fun of working day and night for a month before the big race.

Drivers and mechanics now flock into the new restaurant in Gasoline Alley for coffee and rolls during their "knockoff" periods. Bits of racing news are exchanged and many are the stories told. Once Russ Snowberger had a riding mechanic, Jigger Johnson, who had an amazing knack of doing the wrong thing at the wrong time, Snowberger was wearing a pair of very expensive goggles and during the 500-mile grind they became coated with oil and dirt. Snowberger snatched -nrf (hrn.t hm incm uu ger. Jigger, promptly misunderstanding the gesture, nonchalantly tossed the goggles out of the car.
