The men's singles finale, which lasted two hours and 13 minutes, was interrupted four times by thunderstorms and intermittent showers.

The slow, wet court seemed bother and 'puzzle Drobny. IN THE DAY'S other headliner, France's 32-year-old champion, Nelly Landry, defeated America's Shirley Fry, 20-year-old Akron, and Rollins College girl, 6-2, 0-6, 6-0, to take the women's singles crown. The 27-year-old Parker, top-seeded and first ranking United States net ace, played consistently to Drobny's backhand, which appeared to be the Czech southpaw's weakest stroke. Parker also confused Drobny by answering his drop shots with drop shots. The Czech's drops were extremely inaccurate, pelting out or into the net.

A heavy thunderstorm at one time postponed play for an hour and 35 minutes. The tall, blond Nelly Landry's victory over pigtailed Shirley fry was a case of experience over youth. THERE WAS a slight bulge on the thin stem of the weed. It moved, and I saw lhat it was a nymph of some sort that was crawling up to the surface where it would shed the dark. shell and change to a winged insect. This small activity was of interest to an inch-long sunfish. It drifted up from deeper water and examined the nymph carefully.

It made a couple of nervous darts but apparently decided it was too larg to tackle. Then a craw fish sidled out from under the bank and approached the weed. By this time the nymph was nearly at the surface. The crawfish was very little longer than the sunfish and it couldn't reach its prey from the bottom, but it pulled the weed down with one claw and neatly gathered in the nymph with the other. AM) THEN, just to put the finishing touch on this tiny drama, a small turtle, not six inches long, came up behind the crawfish and paused a couple of inches away to see what was happening.

The craw whirled around and faced the turtle, one claw open and the other still grasping the nymph. The turtle moved in slowly and the craw retreated until it was cornered against the bank. Then it dropped the nymph and darted off to one side and disappeared into deeper water. The turtle lazily gathered in the nymph and went on its way. I don't know what happened to the wood ducks.
