First Kentucky Derby NOT ONLY in baseball, basketball and other sports have there been many changes. For Instance, the first Kentucky Derby of 1875 was run with the Idea of acquainting the jockeys fully with the fact that an official slart had been called at the starting line, there wa a man with a drum. With the call of "go," from the starter, the man beat the drum.

Up the track, perhaps 75 or 100 feet from the starting line, a man stood with a flag. With the call of "go," he swooped it to the ground signaling the start, and then, trailing the flag-stick point into the ground, so that the flag's fall would be visible to jockeys, who might not have heard the drum, he hustled to the inner rail, to get out of the path of the on- rushing horses. WE HAVE NOT mined ft Ken-ttirky Derby since the end of World War and In our opinion the highlight of the Blue UraM state classic is not the actual running of the race hut the prelude. First the huglo railing the high-strung animals to the track, the parade of the dancing, nervous blue bloods, held in restraint, biting at their bits, by their silk draped riders to the starting gales, a quarter of a mile away at the head of the stretch. Then it is' that the unwieldy equlnet, over-anxious for the challenge ahead, act their worst.

Eyes are strained. Then, as In unison a mighty roar goes up from the stands, "they're off." THERE ARE MANY races, true enough, but there's only one Kentucky Derby. Our schedule calls for April baseball, the Kentucky Derby; after which we complete the May slate along Gasoline Alley out at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where they will be preparing for the 500-mile dash for gold and glory on May 30. ion, on the other hand, a loss for the sport to some extent if the spring open season were abolished. The first thing prohably coming to your mind, and which has been expressed by some proponents of an entirely closed season on game fishing through the spring months, is that many potential breeders of an additional supply of fish life will have been taken.

from the waters by anglers before tke spawning season arrives around April 30. Well, that's true, but by the same token those potential breeders will have been taken by anglers all summer long and, too, many fish, at times, are not through spawning long after the summer season opens on June 16. WOULD WE THEX, for that reason, keep the season closed until all fish were through spawning? And should we close fall fishing likewise for fear of anglers catching fish that are potential breeders for the following spring? i No, lengthened closed seasons, in the humble opinion of this old fisherman, isn't the real answer to a greater field of Hoosier fish-ins sport and hunting, too. Tighten up the sport 1oo much wilh closed seasons and other unnecessary restrictions and it brings defeat to the very thing you're trying to accomplish. There are far more vital things whirh can lead to better Hoosier fishing.

I TSTREAM AND DOWN This week's fishing championship falls to Russel Brandy of Spice-land, and it's a 5H-pounder of the bigmouth bass variety putting it there. This one was a 21-incher with a 15-inch belly, and was one of a three-bass catch via the nightcrawler route, the mates to It hefting 2 pounds with a 17 'i -inch girth, and one a 13 V4-incher. And to be sure he'd be In the running for a shot at the top spot Champ' Brandy came up with anolher catch to the tune of four, with one of 'em hitting the 5-pound mark and having a 20 V4-inch length and a 15-lnch girth, while the three others were 13 to 14-inchers. All the catches were made in Flatrock over in Rush County. Boy, howdy! you done a job of flshin' and there's a membership card in the mail to Mr.

Brandy for Fishin' Info's "The One That Didn't Get Away Club" for this new 1946 fishin' season. And just out of reach of a membership in that elite gang with a 4'4-pound bigmouth bass catch, is Harry Hawthorne, of 1040 Harlan Street in our burg, here. This was a 21-incher with a 14-inch girth, and was one of a trio catch, the mates to it running 1 pound 7 ounces and the other 1 pound, all bigmouth and coming by way of nightcrawlers down Buck creek way. A note in the mailbag which says: "A slaughter house is being built on the edge of Brandywine north of Greenfield. They intend to dump sewage into creek let's act!" AIL HAAG TRCG STORES WITH THE ARRIVAL of springtime fishing each year there's always an upbeat on the ever-controversipl question as to whether there should or should not be an open, season for the catching of gamefish in Indiana waters as the rules now allow, and always have in our Hoosier state; whether we should follow the pattern of some of the other states and Canada in not opening up the gameflshing season until the actual start of the summer season around the middle of June.

In our ramblings up and down and around Hoosierland these past couple score years while peeking Into possible hideaways of fighting fins, we've met up with a sizeable number of Hoosier lovers of this great sport of angling, and in the main we've found them to be a pretty generous lot of level-thinking folk concerning the protection and betterment of the aquatic life of our waters and the wildlife of our Hoosier fields and woods, along with the advance- I ment of conservation in general. Though we haven't found any truly heated arguments as to i whether the spring season should r'be retained as it now stands, or whether it should be changed to I a closed status all the way i through, we have found many who were quite undecided as to what would be most beneficial for the sport all the way 'round. NOT BEING ADVERSE to putting ourself right out on a limb in matters anent the sport of flshin' and huntin' and oft' times, likely as not slipping right off the end of it and landing behind the 8 ball below we'll pass along a bit of comment from our own think-tank in response to numerous queries on the subject put to me with almost clockiike regularity each springtime arrival First off, let me say that I'm "agin" any proposed lengthening of the closed season in the spring of the year. Now, at first glance that may seem to some of my readers a bit on the "off" side in coming from an old colyumnist who's been talking conservation over such a long stretch of years. I'm in the belief, too, that if certain elements could he absolutely controlled, perhaps the sport could gain a healthier condition if there weren't even a closed season through the spawning season between April 30 and June 16 as it is now but that's out of the question and should not be considered whatever.

HOWEVER, I CANNOT see where any gain for the fish life of stream and lake, and the sport of angling, could come from a prolonged closed season throughout the entire spring. I ran vis Leagues To Play At Beech Grove Beech Grove Stadium will be open this season for night soft-ball leagues, Joe Kelly, stadium manager, announced yesterday.
