7. clear he favored reservations, une or the objections entered at San Franslco against the candidacy of William Glbbs McAdoo was that he would inherit all the opposition to Wilson. The "son-iiv law" argument did Impress many delegates. Todav the relationship between Mr, McAdoo and his distinguished father-in-law, and particularly the fact that Mr. Wilson made Mr.

McAdoo secretary of the treasury during the war and also director general of the railroads, may prove an asset to the McAdoo cam paiitn. At the moment, the former secretary of the treasury is the center of dis cuss on because of the statement by L. Doheny. oil maenate. that he hired Mr.

McAdoo and paid him a lrge fee after he lcrt the Wilson administration. Many of those with whom the wish Is father to the thought, consider that the McAdoo candidacy has been killed by that statement. Not so wltn the McAdoo supporters, who feel confident the average American citizen can dlstin guish between a fee given while a pub lic omclal is in a position or responsibility and a fee given for legal services when a former official has gone back to his proression. McAdoo Would Testify. Mr.

McAdoo has asked for a chance to testify and in all probability will have some caustic things to say about his critics who have been so ready to drag him into a controversy in which he feels he had no part. He had no con-nectlon, he insists, with the oil leases giving his legal advice on Mexican mat ters. The incident may prove a boomerang In favor of McAdoo, who always has exhibited a resiliency In politics. Again and again he has seemed to be dls Qualified by one circumstance or an other, but the McAdoo followers have some of the faithful crusading spirit which they gave Woodrow Wilson they will not quit him because of an unverified statement of a man who deserted the Democratic party in 1920 ano coniriDutea to tne tepuDiican campaign fund, and whose leases have been annulled largely through the efforts of Democratic members of the United States Senate. The Teapot Dome scandal has for the moment been crowded off the stage by the halt of public activities Incident to the death of Woodrow Wilson.

Mr. McAdoo is coming here to attend the funeral ceremonies, after which he will before the Senate committee and face his critics as boldly as he has in the past. 7 COLLEGES ENTER DEBATE CONTEST According to an announcement made yesterday afternoon by Prof. Rollo H. 1 STAY OF EXECUTION SOUGHT FOR SHAW A petition for stay of execution for John Thomas Shaw, colored, who Is In the death cell at the state prison awaiting electrocution April 7 fcr the murder of Mrs. Helen Hager has been filed with the Supreme court by J. K. Brown and W. S.

Henry, colored attorneys, who recently filed with the court an appeal for Shaw from the verdict of the Marlon county Criminal court. Russell B. Harrison and Clyde P. Miller, attorneys, have a petition pending before the court which asks the removal of Brown and Henry from further par ticipation in the case. The motion filed by these attorneys was signed by Shaw at Michigan City.

The petition for stay of execution Is based on the ground that the Supreme court will not have time to review the case before the date set for the death of Shaw. Mr. Harrison said the petition for stay of execution filed by Brown and Henry would not change the plans of Mr. Miller and. himself in conducting the appeal of the Shaw case.

He said he did not consider the petition necessary at this time because there are more than thirty days between now and the date of execution. The Supreme court has set Friday as the date upon which it will hear the petition of Shaw for the discharge of Brown and Henry.
