ELIM, Evangelical Lutherans in lington National Cemetery In Washington, D.C. Ezekiel was "very consclous'of his Jewishness," Dr. Chyet said, 'as well as being the "typical Victorian." The artist "incarnates the Victorian personality," Dr. Chyet added, a "sense of aristocracy, a kind of sense of and a tendency to gloss overc.on-temporary realities." Ezekiel rejected the sculptor Rodin but "he didn't transfer this prejudice against innovative, work to literature," enjoying Poe and others who were hardly typical Victorians, Dr. Chyet added.

HE IS one of the "few American expatriates who tended to stay from the American colony" where he settled and did much of his work, Dr. Chyet said. "He Italianized himself." One result of this choice Is a-r lch picture of Italian life In the )ast quarter of the 19th Century, and years before World War I. 1 Ezekiel's studio was a meeting place for U.S. Presidents.

WORKING APART, the men shared their drafts to promote accuracy and clarity, Dr. Chyet said. Still, It seems the lion's share of labor feel on him: Ezekiel was In his 60s when he dictated his memoirs to a close friend and he "kept telling the same stories over again" and changing subjects in midsentence. Dr. Chyet called the memoir an "incoherent" effort by a "very old man" who had known just about everybody worth knowing in the society of Europe and world of art from the early 1870s until his death in 1917.

Ezekiel's ties to Cincinnati are multiple, and begin when his family moved from Virginia after the Civil War. They merged into the Queen City Jewish aristocracy and Ezekiel, a young Confederate veteran befriended by Robert E. Lee, went to Europe to pursue his career in art as the General and others urged. LOTS OF Ezekiel sculptures can be seen in the Queen City. The artist Is burled at the foot of a Confederate monument he sculpted for Ar followed by supper.

The Rev. James Harklns, chaplain of the Community of the Transfiguration, Glendale, will assist the rector. Music by Bach for two violins and organ will be played during the service. FIFTH Christian Church, 3203 Wold Walnut Hills: The Rev. Dr.

Gaines will address the 11 a.m. Sunday service and there will be a one-act play, The Doorkeeper, at 5 p.m., all part of women's day. Graduated from Central State University and Howard University Law School, she practices with her husband Leslie in Cincinnati.

FIRST Antioch Baptist Church, 1511 Gilpin Walnut Hills: Je Mission, will have an "informational" rally at 4 p.m. Sunday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Washington and Rockdale Avon-dale, with Pastor Theodore Scheidt as the main speaker. Theme of the rally of dissidents within the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod (LCMS) is, "Christ is Lord in Cincinnati." Pastor Scheidt was fired from his Lancaster, Ohio, parish for his dissident activities, a rally sponsor said. His father is Pastor Arthur Scheidt of Concordia Lutheran Church, Clifton. The dissent involves doctrine and government of the LCMS, with ELIM members in the minority.

PRICE Hill Baptist Church, 4431 Glenway The Rev. Dr. William R. Myers, 49, new president of Northern (American) Baptist Seminary, Chicago, returns to his "home" church to speak at the 7:30 p.m. Sunday service.

He was graduated from the University of Cincinnati and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and ordained in 1949. EPISCOPAL Church of St. Mlch- Ry BEN L. KAUFMAN Knquirer Reporter An important, historical document has disappeared but two Hebrew Union College (HUC) alumni saved its contents for readers. Missing Is the original memoir of Moses Jacob Ezekiel, an adopted Cincinnatian whose sculptures are found In collections here and abroad.

Ezekiel (1844-1917) was the first American Jew known as a major international sculptor. Today, his thoughts are available in a new book, Moses Jacob Ezekiel, Memoirs from the Baths of Diocletian, Wayne State University Press, $25. The finely-produced and well-illustrated 508-page book is edited by Rabbis Joseph Gutman and Stanley F. Chyet. Each man has a Ph.D.

from HUC in Cincinnati where they were ordained, with Dr. Gutman an art historian at Wayne State University today and Dr. Chyet associate director of the American Jewish Archives at the HUC Clifton campus. "Joe was the first person at HUC to discover that Ezekiel had left a sizeable typescript," Dr." Chyet said this week as he described the literary collaboration. Dr.

Gutman was curator of the HUC museum. Mrs. Rebecca Rauh of Cincinnati had the original and she let Dr. Gutman microfilm It about 10 years ago. "Apparently the ortglnal memoir has disappeared," Dr.

Chyet said Wednesday. Nothing was done by the two friends at HUC then: Dr. Gutman was leaving for a new post at Wayne State and "I was Just too busy," Dr. Chyet recalled. The two scholars did agree as the 1960s ended to move on the project Miss Sarah Grossman, an archives secretary Dr.

Chyet said was "devoted" to Dr. Gutman, undertook to locate and collect photos of Ezekiel sculptures. That Invaluable Job In trusted hands, Dr. Chyet began putting the memoir into order. "Joe did the basic Intro to the book, the art history.

I did most of the reorganizing and rearranging" of the manuscript. "I did not rewrite it I was very careful." CALL 421-6300 ENQUiRER CLASSIFIED The THKT IHlE IS THiNE" NINTH STREET BAPTIST CHURCH Between Race and Vine Dr. J. Wesley Rafter, Minister Rev. Kenneth E.
