Manuscript covers Ring binders Typing paper THE TIMES newspaper for Brookshire and Katy, Texas History of the First Katy Football Team The history of the Katy football team was given by T. J. Heinemeier at the banquet given the 1959 squad by Mims' Restaurant recently.

Football started in Katy in the fall of 1939 with Ned Reader as head coach, assistant coach, and trainer. Through the efforts of a then very active Dads Club. enough private donations were collected to outfit about a dozen players. R. E.

McIlroy donated the first football. Each boy was required to furnish his own shoes. HEAR! G. Ernest Thomas Katy Methodist Church January 17 24 ELECT DANIEL (Sam) WILSON SHERIFF of Waller County "Just and Efficient Law Enforcement" Happy New Year! Farmers State Bank Brookshire, Texas Member F.D.I.C. "Never too busy to visit" Approximately 25 boys showed up for the first football workout.

After several sessions of blocking and tackling about one half of the boys decided against the game. Selecting six men what was left, Coach Reader put the first Katy football team on the field. The football field was a piece ground located just west of the Old Gymnasium. Fans walked the sidelines because there were no stands and all games were played in the daytime because the field WAR not lighted. The first year schedule included such six-man football veterans as Wallis, East Bernard, and Addicka, These teams were veterans compared to Katy because only one boy on the Katy squad had ever seen 8 football game.

Stanley Rheman had gone to A. M. College with his big brother, George, to watch a game. Even though the firat Katy kick-off resembled a hunter shooting into a covy of quail, little by little the boys cot the general idea. Before the season WAS over even many fans understood what was meant by such football language 89 "First And Ten," "Forward Pass," and "End Run." Although the first football season record was not, impressive the Tigers did manage to win two games.

According to Coach Reader the first couple of games were slightly short of the regula-! tion time. He said that there! was rule that if a team scored 50 points the game was called for "want of contest" and the first couple of games Katy's scored 50 points. The first gume had all the color that the Katy games of today. There was a band and 8 pep squad, equipped with cheerleaders. Cheerleaders that first year were Lila Grace Rapsilver, now Mrs.

Stanley Thompson, Valary Hazelwood, now Mrs. Grady Shearer, and Floy Ruth Peck, now Mrs. W. C. Stockdick, Jr.

The band director was Mr. T. J. Heinemeier. The bands first drum major was Armna Lue Palmer.

Ray Ginn, now A pilot at Ellington Air Force base, was captain of that first Katy team. Junior Lummus was a dreaded fullback. He is now with Houston Lighting and Power Co. Other members of that starting team are Wess Buller, now a rancher in Patterson, Floyd Haskett and Laverne Sible, both of Katy, Jessie Bruton and Joe McDonald. Other members of the squad were Stanley and John Rheman of Brookshire, Harold Andrews, Richard Crowder, Robert Organdy, John Cardiff and Sammy Caldwell were water boys.

Officers of the Dads Club, were J. I. Brown, president; A. W. Thompson, vice-president; and Arthur Miller, secretary-treasurer.

Members of the executive committee were C. C. Cardiff, deceased; H. E. Jordon, deceased; R.

W. McRoy, H. Hood, Brother Dubberly, V. D. Avera and Dr.

J. D. Motheral, deceased. It was through the effort of these men that a football team in Katy was started. How grand must it be for these men to look back and recall that they helped start this thing called football that is on the mind of everyone in Katy.
