l3i JA By Bob and Dick Dunkel, Jr. (Copyright 1970, Dunkel Sports Features) Last weekend the Detroit Lions became the best team in pro football and probably lost their 'chance for the playoffs. By wrecking St. Louis, 16-3, the Lions brought tfrelr average scoring margin to 10.0 points per game over opponents indexed at 117.7 for the NFL's best total rating of 127.7. The Lions (8-4) nave scored more points than any other team and have given up fewer than any except Minnesota, St.

Louis and Los Angeles. Ironically, the Motowners slipped ahead of Minnesota the day after the Vikings eliminated them in the NFC's Central Division race. The Vikings in first place since October 11 have lost 7.3 rating points along with Gary Cuozzo since whlp-1ng the Lions 30-17 six weeks ago. With an outside chance of becoming the NFC's "fourth team" in the playoffs, the Lions must get by No. 5 Los Angeles in Monday night's thriller.

One of the best things that's happened to the Bengals this year was when receiver coach Bill Walsh persuaded Lewis to come out of "retirement" and try out with the Bengals. The man he a 1 -r e-placed, Dale Livingston, is not even listed in the NFC's top 15 punters or field goal kickers this year. With Lewis punting, and Horst Muhlmann kicking goals and extra points, Livingston is a forgotten man at Spinney Field. an from Stanford, wno Minnesota 125 1 g0 Oioler Registered Pittsburgh 111.3 i) came to the Bengals via the Canadian League and a brief stint with the New Detroit 127.7 6) York Giants, kept the 'Homo Team Chargers constantly (A lell-McClurt Syndicato Feature) Marketing Launch Systems backed up in their own UG) OSU In Splash BENGAL BITES The third to first place In the American Conference. Last week's leader, Dave Lee of Baltimore, dropped to third at 45.3 and Kansas City's 1 Wilson climbed to second at 45.5.

Over in the National Conference, New Orleans' Julian Fagel leads his loop with a 42.7 average, and Lewis, Wilson, Lee and three others in the AFC top that mark. Lewis, who also can and has doubled as a running back and a passer with success, recalled that he was third in the Canadian League his first year with a mere 45.5 average, and second his last year with 47.5. Lewis has a habit that upsets Bengal fans more than a little bit. He waits until what seems the last Why? Is he purposely Incurring the possibility of getting hit, thus getting a five-yard penalty and an automatic Cincinnati first down? "No," Lewis said Tuesday, "that's not It at all. I just want to give our guys as long as possible to get downfield.

Then, I can afford to take my time. The line gives me great blocking and Bob Johnson gets that ball back to me in a real hurry." Dave laughed. "I'd rather they didn't get that close," he said. Against San Diego, Dave's first punt in the first quarter went 54 yards, and was returned 13. In the third quarter, he legged one 49 yards into the end zone, and another for 61 that rolled dead on the Chargers' seven.

His 60-yarder, late In the third, was run back 17 yards, and punts of 56 and 43 yards in the fourth quarter were returned one and three yards, respectively, a 1 1 1 1 to the height he gets and excellent punt coverage by the special teams. "It was just an exceptional day," Lewis said. "It'll only happen once a year. One of my troubles last year at New York (where he was the last player waived In September) was that I didn't get the ball up high enough." The Bengals have spotted Lewis in the game at running back four times this season (he was given several "look-see at quarterback i the pre-season), twice as a runner and twice more as a passer. "The first time I ran," Lewis recalls vividly, "was when I gained one yard at Buffalo and got my face busted up." (He wasn't wearing a chin strap.) "In the San Diego game I gained seven yards." He's also two-for-two in passing, completing halfback passes of 18 yards to Bob Trumpy In the Pittsburgh game, and 12 yards to Chip Myers against New Orleans.

side of the field. He played a big part In the Bengals' 17-14 victory. And, finally, he booted himself Into the leading punter in the National Football League. "It's great news, just great. I'm glad to hear it," said the big guy from Fresno, Calif.

But Lewis really didn't seem surprised, because last summer at the Bengals' camp at Wilmington, Ohio, he said with honest self-assurance "I expect to average more than 47 yards here." Why 47 yards? "Because," said Lewis at the time, "that's what I averaged at Montreal and I know I can do better." Lewis wasn't kidding In the least. As of right now, Lewis has 69 punts for 3190 yards, an average of 46.2, and has Jumped from Ohio State, one of the top 10 swimming teams in NCAA competition last year, invades UC's Laurence Hall Pool Friday for a dual meet with coach Roy Lagaly's Bearcat mermen at 6 p. m. Cleveland has won 14 of the 19 games between the two clubs, but Landry was referring specifically to the last two in which the underdog Browns blew the Cowboys out of the playoffs with amazing ease. Landry said he may call the plays the rest of the season, because "we're winning and I don't want to change the pattern not because Craig isn't capable of calling a good game he is."
