Spawning, as a matter of fact, is part of the spirit and fun of "How Now." The cast is huge, considering today's cost for the care and feeding of astors. But everyone plays his role like he's the lead. It was that kind of gang on that there stage. The leads actually are Dean Jones, a handsome devil who is heart and head; Jessica Walter, who looks very good in very little skirt; Kitty Sullivan, who has an abdominal problem, and Dean Ditt-man, a Wall Street maggot Who knows he's at least "taking" the country if not actually something stronger. The story line Is simple enough, and quite probably not really important.

"How Now" is pure freneticism like the Indy 500 or the Kentucky Derby: Stories lines are the same, but proficient casts punch out the excitement, year after year. I suppose today's hardcore hippies would find "How Now" an Old Fash ioned without benefit of alcohol. But then so's their grandmother an old girl who more often than not is comforting to have around. I must admit I often like "grandmas" in the theater. The new stuff is too far out to be thoroughly understood and appreciated now.

"Hair," for instance, might blow my mind when it turns a little gray 20 years from now. i ACADEMY AWARD I BEST ACTRESS! Exclusive First James Coburn LAST DAY! In the Kenley production, for instance, John took the show's smash song, "Step to the Rear," and made it the finale of the first act. Originally, David Merrick buried "Step to the Rear" internally in the first act. Rearranged by Kenley, who is a v1sp with a whip, "Step to the Rear," becomes a wild, wooly and wonderful climax.

Not only that, but thin, pink John Kenley added another innovation. He hired some 35 members of the Dayton Amer Shrine Temple Red Beret Drum and Bugle Corps to step from the rear of the hall at the final curtain playing "Step to the Rear." This group of inspired young Negroes added a touch that Broadway, and Merrick, might never have considered. The fervent kids will do their thing tonight and Friday at 8:30 p. m. Saturday and Sunday they curtain up at 2:45 p.

m. for matinees. And Sunday night at 7:30 they get frenetic all over again. Miss it and cheat yourself. 700 CCC HWY.
