THE CINCINNATI ENQUIRER 23 Joiner Has Some Lost Time To Redeem Sunday Saturday, October 6, 1973 BY DICK FORBES Enquirer Sports Reporter Paul Brown watched poker-faced Charlie Joiner run down the field in a post pattern, extend his arms and leap to catch a pass from Ken Anderson. Marveled Brown: "He is something." Charlie Joiner, the Bengals' talented wide receiver, out for three weeks with knee damage suffered against Green Bay, will be ready to go against the Browns at Cleveland Sunday, and no one Is happier about it than Brown except maybe Joiner himself. "No man ever worked harder or gave it more to get himself back in shape," Brown sajd, rubbing his shoe in the AstroTurf. "We needed it. The team is important to him.

"I have a lot of respect for Charley both as a man and an athlete. Our players and coaches do too. It's Important to Joiner himself to get back where he can help." It wasn't the first time this week that Brown had praised Joiner, who came to the Bengals in mid-season Last year In a two-for-two trade with Houston. "I'll pull Into the parking lot (at Spinney Field) at 9:15 or so, and there'll be Joiner out running laps around the field," Brown noted one time. "It's the kind of an attitude in a person you don't get every day In a trade." Browns- Insisted, "There are 1000 different ways to prepare for a game.

"It's no big as Paul Brown would say. How we do in Cleveland will be determined on the field. "I believe the emotional aspect of the game depends on what happens on the field, and It changes. When there's a great play, the tempo changes, one way or another, Just as It does with you fans. "In the past, with the Browns, their skilled people have outperformed our skilled people.

What's going to happen Sunday will not be decided In the paper or on the radio or on television It's simply how we perforin on Sunday. Player guests were defensive end Sherman White and guard Pat Matson, both of whom tried to lighten their real feelings about Sunday's game "It's a big game because I like to see Paul Brown smile," Sherm kidded. "When he smiles I'm happy." Asked If he considered himself the best defensive end In the league, Sherm answered, "I like to say I am and feel I am, and I honestly think potentially I am." Matson said, "The key to our offense Is how we control Sports their defensive tackles. I'm going to have Walter Johnson over me. I know Walter, and I'm always ready for him, and he's always ready for me." The soft-spoken Joiner, who prefers to do his talking on the field, feels like getting back to play against the Browns means "I'll give It 1 10 effort.

I've got three games to make up for." Charley doesn't approach this game with any Idea he's going to be as game-prepared as he was before his injury. "I'm still very much off what I was," he said. "You can run all day, every day, a hundred 100-yard sprints, and it's not enough. "You've got to practice every day to be at your peak on Sunday. So I've Just to give that much more." Joiner sees a tough club.

It always has been. They've got that good defense. "We've Just got to go out there and try and lick 'em. It's an emotional game on both sides. It's Just a question of who keeps going the longest." Meanwhile, Friday, as the Bengals raced through their snappiest practice of the week, Brown noted he had shortened his team's practices for two successive days.

Ohio State's Rufus Mayes took over the left offensive tackle slot formerly held by Stan Walters, who Is in Christ Hospital for tests for an undiagnosed stomach aliment that has cost him 12 pounds In 10 days. Rufe's playing time has been limited so far this' season, and actually since midway of the 1972 campaign when he was sidelined with an Injury that gave Walters his big chance. The Bengals also can shift Howard Fest to tackle, where he used to play, Instead of, using him at messenger right guard with John Shlnners. Brown noting, acknowledges this, but notes, "But If we do It weakens us at guard where we feel Fest Is best suited, and that's the way It is everytlme we lose a regular. "The loss of (running back) Doug Dressier really hurt us, and spoiled our plans the same way." Dressier has Just undergone knee surgery and will be out at least six weeks.

In Cleveland, Friday, coach Nick Skorich announced the Browns have lost Pete Adams, regular guard and the club's second draft choice this year, for the season. Adams will also undergo knee surgery next Tuesday, after suffering an Injury In an exhibition game with Atlanta last August 25. Browns' fullback Bo Scott, who has been Injured since before the season started, worked out for the first time in five weeks Thursday, but still Is not expected to be ready for the Bengals. Sports. At the weekly meeting of the Touchdown Club Friday, linebacker coach Vince Costello who must feel a little emotion about the upcoming battle with his old team, the Tables Turned For The Record, Grossman The Owl UC Must Watch Today's College Football Miami, Marshall Vie selection for two years and Is Joachim's prime target.

Which Is as it should be. The two set all sorts of Pennsylvania pass-catch records as teammates on the same Haverford High School team. was Injured In the Xavier game. It was hoped he would be fit for today's contest but word Friday was that he would not play at all. "Our biggest trouble now is that we don't have any depth," said Marshall coach Jack Lengyl.

"We're still two years away from recruiting a complete class structure. We have some keQ people and If they get hurt like this, we haven't got many to replace them." Taking over for Oliver will be Bob Eshbaugh, a punter, no less. Eshbaugh was recruited as a quarterback but has not played there for two years. He was used Infrequently as a running back last year. About 13,000 are expected for today's game, putting the Redskins still closer to at least one record.

With crowds of 53.973 and 41,606 respectively at Purdue and South Carolina, Miami has already had a total audience of over 102,000 after just three games. Last year's total for the entire season was M0.78O. The offenses: ning with it. Or Quincy Daniels or Tom Llggtns or Norm Jacobs. "We want to keep them honest," says Mason.

Temple's varied attack promises to give the Clncy defense new and difficult problems. Jachim not only throws well (four TDs, 505 yards on 32 of 70, but has run 25 times with the ball. "A good option quarterback." says Mason, who also must keep an eye on Glnestra, the backup QB with five scoring heaves already. Hynoskl and Tom Sloan with 748 yards between them give the Ows a double ground threat. It's Grossman, though, who leaves 'em drooling.

But the Bearcats' scoring moments aren't many by contrast. Clncy has put only three touchdowns on the boards since the 40-pointer against Xavier in the opener. What is encouraging, however, Is the progress of quarterback Mike Campbell. He's directed several long drives in the last two games.

Trouble is the fumble. Clncy's bobbled 13 times and lost six of them. "Our offense had better come of age," warns Mason. "It's true we've made some progress. But not enough." The passing game Is particularly Irksome.

"We've had a couple of opportunities to break games wide open if we hit the open man," says Mason, recalling some tell-tale lneptness the movies show. "The quarterback who does this and I mean now Is going to play." Obviously, Mason Is going to start Campbell, with let-terman Mike Shoemaker and freshman Henry Miller In the wings. It so FOR AN APPOINTMENT of unanticipated expansion, because Both the Purdue and SC coaches admitted after those games that they had lost. In part, because their players had failed to take Miami seriously. Their own complacency and over-confidence had been turned Into weapons for Miami.

With humble Marshall, youthful and ailing, coming to town, Miami now has to guard against those same letdowns that cost its foes the past two weeks. "Coming off two victories like this a letdown Is something you always worry about," coach Bill Mallory admitted Friday. "I've been telling them (his players) that Marshall Is going to come In here ready to go and we have to be well prepared." Mallory feels his team understands the problem and has overcome it. "Let me say that I think we're ready," he said. "We've had a good week In practice.

They've worked hard preparing for this game and I have to say that they're ready." The only one who Isn't ready Is Junior John Rouda-bush, linebacker and punter. An ankle sprain suffered against South Carolina will keep him on the sideline for two or three weeks. Joe Gardner, a 195-pound senior, will fill in at linebacker for Roudabush and Jack Schulte, a flanker by trade, will do the punting. Marshall, 12 on the season, is coming off a 30 28 loss to Xavier last week. As if that isn't bad enough, the Thundering Herd will have to play without their starting quarterback, Reggl, Oliver.

Oliver, one of only seven seniors In Marshall's top 22, I By BILL FORD Enquirer Sports Reporter PHILADELPHIA "They have this tight end Graser, Grocer, something like that (it's Randy Grossman) And I never have seen a better tight end anywhere. He is a real Joy to watch. He catches the football, deep, long and he blocks, too. "And they have this quarterback (Steve) Joachim, who moved away from Joe Paterno at Penn State because he wants to throw the ball. And If he can't do It, there's this other guy (Marty Glnestra).

"And then they have this fullback (Henry Hynoske), a big (200 pounds), tough dive guy. "And they've got well, you get the Idea. They've got real good people where they need 'em." That's University of Cincinnati coach Tony Mason leafing through a thick dossier on the explosive Temple Owls who oppose his gritty Bearcats at 7:30 tonight. It is Mason's lot to put together a defense to thwart the Owls whose potency has produced 159 points In four games this season. If the flesh of his defense cannot repel Joachim and then, as Mason puts "we've gotta score with 'em" to make It a ball game.

Oddsmakers figure the Bearcats have neither the defense nor the attack to stay with the Owls and thus have installed the home forces of coach Wayne Hardin and three-touchdown choice in this interscctional game, first ever, by the way, between the schools. Mason, the gabby, personable rookie mentor who's seen his young, improving Bearcats lose two heart-breakers the past couple of weekends, thinks the Owls can be had. "We should be able to move on them," he says. "They don't appear to be as strong on defense as Villa-nova (7-14) and Tulsa No. Wl.

Wanstrath is the club's most Improved player, Cecchlnl Insists. "He's helped our offensive line Is out with an ankle Injury." Wanstrath, though, Is but one counted upon tonight. Quarterback Tim Dydo Is another.

"We didn't allow the big play against Marshall. They still scored 28 points and that's certainly too much," said Cecchlnl. "If we canthls one out it would be our second win in fy a row and that hasn't happened In five years at this university." Cecchlnl is counting on the reversal of form to ontlnue for Xavier football. Cajuns' coach Russ Faul-klnberry Is hoping for a reversal too after successive losses to to Arkansas State, Louisiana Tech and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. "We haven't lost three games In a row since the 1963 season," said Fauklnberry.

"We're all going to have to reedlcate ourselves and face the business at hand. We must rebound from these three losses and come back strong starting this week. "The easy part of our schedule Is over with and we're getting into the tough part of our schedule," said Faulkinberry. "We're going to make some changes with the hope it will bolster our offense and give us more of a scoring punch." "I know how the people of London must have felt during the German blitzkrieg. We were hurt badly by the air game, expeclally those long bombs." He referred to scoring tosses of 73 and 41 yards.
