Carter, an Episcopal priest who went from 1 preaching to Presidents to a life on skid row after personal tragedy, was married Saturday in the Bowery mission where he rediscovered the religion which led to his rehabilitation. Carter, 59. was married to Hermine Elizabeth Schmid.

Seriously Wounded; Wife Faces Charge A man shot in his Dillonville home Friday night was reported in serious condition Saturday in the recovery room of General Hospital. County police said Arnold DeMint. 31. 8563 Donegal was arguing with his wife, Rita, over his losing his billfold when he was shot with a 16-gauge shotgun. DeMint had gunshot wounds in his chest and left elbow.

The Hamilton County Sheriff's Office has charged Mrs. DeMint with shooting with intent to kill. Those Fancy Pants A Tax Deduction WASHINGTON (AP) Lawyers are getting an expense-account break on the fancy clothes that tradition requires them to wear when arguing a case before the Supreme Court. A cutaway coat and striped trousers are the unvarying "uniform" for the barristers, but not many of them own such seldomworn attire. So they have been forced to borrow or rent the clothes at $10 to $15 a day.

Now the comptroller general has ruled that since the formal day wear is required, the rental may be claimed as a business expense. Incidentally, the Justice Department asked for the ruling after learning that Secret Service agents who work for the Treasury Department had been allowed to claim rental fees on dinner jackets and tails when required to wear such clothes at White House social affairs. Union Charges Firm Won't Bargain Eubank Tire Co. Inc. and Eubank Tire Sales operating at Dayton and Springfield, were charged Saturday with unfair labor practices in a complaint filed by the National Labor Relations Board.

A hearing on the complaint. based on charges by the United Rubber Workers AFL-CIO, will be held at Dayton on October 6. The complaint charged that the company has refused to enter into collective bargaining negotiations with the union since last December 16. The union claims it has been the designated bargaining agent since June of 1967. Gilligan To Speak BATAVIA, Ohio (Special)-John J.

MA 1-3662 a marriage in the history of the 90- year-old mission. Carter's best man, Leo Heller, was a former drinking buddy who is married to the bride's sister. But no non-reformed derelicts were among the 175 guests who crowded the mission's chapel. Carter, a member of one of Virginia's most prominent families, was assigned to St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Washington in 1937.

One of the members of his congregation was President Roosevelt. In 1944, Carter was married. Nine years later his wife died giving birth to still born child. Two months later Carter, who had never taken a drink until the tragedy, resigned because of drinking which he said resulted in his being jailed "at least 50 times" in one year. After years of drifting drunkenness, Carter somehow "found Jesus.

I can't tell you how or when but I realized that I was completely hopeless and I asked God to help and He did." Carter and his bride were married in a 35-minute non-denominational service by the Rev. John Wilson Lockwood, a Baptist minister and pastor of the mission. After the service, he and his new wife marched proudly from the Center for Homeless Men. "I don't believe any rehabilitation program is of any value unless a man makes a commitment to Christ." he said. "'The AA (AlcoholAnonymous) will give you sobriety, but only Christ can give you SO eternal life.

Tide' Blamed In Fish Slaughter GOLDEN MEADOW, La. (P) A Louisiana official said Saturday the scourge that killed 100 million to 200 million fish in the Gulf of Mexico last week might have been "red tide." an infestation of poisonous microscopic plants. There was no official conclusion. however, on the cause of the kill that blanketed a large area of the gulf with dead fish. Pollution experts were studying water samples to pin down the cause of the kill in a 30-square-mile area around Timbalier Island and Wine Island Pass, about 150 miles southwest of New Orleans.

Clark Hoffpauer, commission director, said the dead fish were mostly menhaden, a "trash fish" to sports fishermen but of value to the state's fertilizer industry. Officials said that although a few catfish also were killed, sport fishing was not significally affected. The fish kill, now apparently over, was discovered Thursday. LAST SUMMER "red tide" plagued New Jersey shore resorts for about four weeks during July and August. It swept in periodically a 15-mile stretch of shoreline from Sandy Hook Bay to Shark River, driving swimmers from the water and hurting business in resort towns.

Another wave of dead fish was collecting over the weekend on the shores of southern Lake Michigan, which has had similar problems in the past. The cause, while not pinned down, is not "red tide."
