INN VII a iew J.1. V-j -Radio Ilrit'lV nana xjooa But Not Show For Everyone Local Boxing Tonight Is Noble Experiment 1 1 "i nl i the century France; the very crisp, sharp direction which tends to keep things moving almost faster then you'd like to see them go; the absolutely ruthless integrity to the book (with but a few exceptions); the great pains taken to make certain that Nana is as much a person as she is a symbol of something rotten happening in most Parisian social circles; the very careful job of editing and scripting, making sura that what's left out Is nothing which will detract from the power and thrust of the book; and, finally, the acting. Katharine Schofield as Nana is perfect, able to take on the many complexities of the role-ranging all the way from your basic "harlot with a heart of gold" to vicious, ruthless harridan bent on the destruction of all those near her-with as little as a single line of dialog or a twitch of a facial muscle. John Bryans as Steiner, one of Nana's lovers, is dellciously repulsive. The perfect portrait of money without class.

Eric Flynn as drama critic Daguenat Is equally repulsive. Josie Kidd as Zoe, Nana's maid, is near perfection. IT'S ADVISABLE that one watch all five presentations as they're aired on WCET. That way the complex lines will hold together and the story seem more complete. Watching one and skipping one is possible but wouldn't be nearly as rewarding.

The five hours are meant to be taken as a whole, not as five single shows. Once more: the production is excellent, but not for everyone. The theme loosely that a life of the flesh is not life at all but rather a slow death-is In no way pretty to watch. Don't torment yourself if you're squeamish. sionable.

If you're one of the two, then don't watch it because you'll get upset. And we certainly don't want that. For those who aren't kiddies, impressionable or easily led astray, however, "Nana" is a must. Based on Emile Zola's monumental novel of decaying French society in the late 1900s, the BBC production (it aired nationally last year) is' offered as a special programming treat during pledge week at TV 48. And it has to be seen.

That's all. Just has to. But it's not light viewing. The novel and the TV show-arising from it are complex, far from hilariously cheerful and anything but giddy. There are laughs but they're superficial and always at someone's expense.

There are moments when all is clear but they're fleeting. There are bright hopes but they're forever being dashed to the ground. DEFINITELY NOT lightweight stuff. "Nana" is brutally realistic many prefer to call it naturalistic as it chronicles the excesses of a Parisian prostitute as she moves from her place as an actressprostitute to the darling of society to the bottom of its barrel. At the risk of oversimplifying, "Nana" is a rise and fall type case study.

The woman a product of the streets who insinuates herself into society by selling her favors is looked at in great depth and from all angles with no point of view neglected. It's not the prettiest picture you're likely ever to see, but it is one of the most complete. And moving. And compelling, even if the terms are horo-rlfic. The W'CET version is amazing for several reasons: the tremendous attention to detail in recreating turn of By JIM KMPPENBERG Enquirer Reporter Okay, let's get the delicate part of it over with from the start.

"Nana," a five part series premiering at 9:30 p.m. Sunday on Channel 48 and then running the next four nights at 10 p.m., is viewing, fa adult as anything which has yet hit the home screen. In movie terms it would be an R. Easily. And overwhelmingly.

It takes two hours to film each roast, Garrison said. Besides Lucille Ball February 7, Dean will roast Sammy Davis, Jackie Gleason and one more this season. Garrison Is confident NBC will order 12 roasts for next season, based on the ratings success of the six in 1974-75. 'Go' For Kids Saturday's 12:30 p.m. NBC-TV "Go!" episode on Channel 5 Is an Interesting insight to birth of animals, insects, birds and humans.

It's an Intelligent presentation for Saturday children-viewers, given In a most tasteful manner. Perhaps, it Is too tasteful at times: Much time is spent on showing blooming flowers, a technique which appears to be used to soften the subject. Actual birth of a human baby is not shown. The baby is shown covered with blood after it has been removed from the mother, how It Is cleaned and doctored and then presented to its parent. Animal births are shown In progress.
