'Jennie' Great Plus To WCET THE CINCINNATI ENQUIRER Wednesday. October 8. 1975 Puppy Love Opens Afterschool Specials TV Preview By Steve Hoffman Sf fry I sister than mother and son, wrote Winston once in his memoirs. "Jennie Jerome" tonight is followed by a six-minute-plus interview with scriptwriter Julian Mitchell and Peregrine Churchill, Jennie's surviving grandson and coauthor with Mitchell of a new book about her. SIMILAR INTERVIEWS follow each of the remaining six hour stories.

The Duke and Duchess of Marlborough and Lord Norwich, are among others questioned about women's rights in Edwardian England, the Americans who married into the Churchill family and affectionate anecdotes about this prize British clan. There are other qualities that help make "Jennie" so impressive. Like, Andre Previn's music, particularly those piano pieces mimed by Jennie and sister Clara (Linda Liles). Like, the beautiful clothes worn by Remick. Like, the total settings.

If you are as outspoken as some about the state of commercial TV programming, then you owe it to yourself to try "Jennie" as well as "Shoulder To Shoulder." If you don't expose yourself to either or both PBS series and you still cry "Junk!" about nightly TV programming, then I declare you a Last spring, I recommended to Squire D. Rushnell, vice president for ABC-TV's children's programs, an Afterschool Special about love, affection and touching. We were at that children's television conference in Washington, D. C. instigated ty WCPO-TV and the University of Cincinnati.

Today's 4:30 p.m. hour on Channel 12, "It Must Be Love, Cause I Feel So Dumb," is not the answer to that suggestion. Rushnell responded to my idea by telling me of this season's premiere for the ABC series. It sounded interesting at the time. How important is today's work, written, produced and directed by the team of Arthur and Evelyn Barron, is hard to say.

In comparison to past Afterschool Special subjects, it probably compares well. IN MY mind, learning to appreciate affection of parents and friends, that touching is not sisslfied and that caring is a vital part of living are far more important. Rushnell accepted my idea as possible for another day. Alfred Lutter plays the young league, Cathy, an intelligent, thoughtful classmate. It's believe-able when she breaks down and cries when she faces Eric after the canine dies.

There is a basic, underlying message to today's hour and Eric's father (Michael Miller) states it best: "You're you! Just be yourself. You can't buy affection. You can't make yourself over for a girl." Thinking about this program, I would say It is one of ABC-TV's best for parents to watch with their children in this long series of programs. Most of the others could stand by themselves for youngsters. PRE-TEENERS MIGHT stick with "It Must Be Love" longer with a mother or dad sitting nearby to discuss, answer questions or act as a sounding board for an observation.

The teenage audience might be split over Interest in today's offering. Despite any criticism, I have been quite pleased with this series of monthly afternoon children's specials by ABC. They have all been highly entertaining, some have been motivating and each has made a contribution in offering information. I see nothing wrong with exposing the problem of puppy love. However, I believe there are far more Important issues to discuss with children on their level such as the free expression of love and affection Steve Hoffman.

For the average television viewer, this could be the best of all falls on WCET-TV, Channel 48 and the Public Broadcasting Service. Tonight's premiere of the seven-week "Jennie" at 9 o'clock is another example. Last week, I wrote that the "Shoulder To Shoulder" miniseries about the British women's fight for the vote was "the best news to come forth" and gave it four stars for its beauty, dialogue and movement. I did not think its premiere was approachable. I do now after seeing "Jennie's" debut.

It may not hold the forceful-ness and excitement of "Shoulder" but it surely contains those other qualities. In England last season, Lee Remick received three major acting awards for her work as Lady Randolph Churchill, the former Jennie Jerome, the Brooklyn-born lass. IN MY six years at this desk, I can't remember two simultaneous series on TV 48 which should captivate the mass audience, those viewers who care little for some of the special-interest programs on public TV. The series will run through Sunday night, November 19. WCET will repeat each episode at 8 p.m.

Saturday so that once you get hooked onto "Jennie," you should be able to swing each hour. Remick is adorable as Jennie, the exciting, maverick daughter of an American clan based in Paris. Jennie is described as adding "color, romance and a dash of spectacular irresponsibility" as Winston Churchill's mother. Remick pays her dues well as Jennie. TONIGHT, LEE gets full opportunity to fit herself as Jennie, quite a contrast to her last American TV challenge, that of the childless housewife in "A Girl Named Sooner," the movie made in Vevay, Ind.

In that two-hour NBC film, Remick was wooden as were most of her cast-mates. Tonight, she is more like Ben Gazzara's lover in the "QB VII" masterpiece or William Hold-en's Bumper Morgan interest in "Blue Knight." As I said about "Shoulder," I must repeat for "Jennie." Is "Jennie" an award-winner in the States? I will retreat from that question. Both opening hours, however, greatly impressed me for total quality. "Shoulder" is more exciting because of its total cause. There are three familiar faces in the "Jennie" cast.

Onetime "Peyton Place" star Barbara Parkins is Jennie's sister, Leonie and U. S. commercial voice Dan O'Herlihy plays their father. Randolph is played by Ronald Pickup, the sickly Edmund in "Long Day's Journey Into Night" and the forger in the U. S.

movie, "Day Of The Jackal." TONIGHT'S HOUR, "Jennie Jerome," is almost completely devoted to the quick love affair with Randolph. By the end of the three-day courtship, each is fully prepared for the proposal and acceptance. The rest of the stories aren't all sweetness, roses and heavenly clouds. The series goes through Jennie's succeeding marriages, tragedy and Winston's political growth. All the while, Jennie was at his side, advising and guarding his interests.

A Cincinnati Stingers clinic at 11 a.m. will precede the regular p.m. Avco network show.

Singer John Gary and "Ice Ca-pades" star Adele Boucher will be featured in the TV show along with Stinger players and Braun's "Fun Bunch" and Cliff Lash's band. One novelty number will be a "Thoroughly Modern Millie" flapper number by Colleen Sharp and Nancy James. PAUL SOMMERKAMP, WKRC radio sports director, contends some of his morning listeners have lost him since the station revised its format. "People set their clocks by me," he said. Paul now reports scores in the 7 and 8 a.m.

If you saw Ellen Bur-styn's "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore" movie, you may recall Lutter played her bratty son. The rest of the cast is unfamiliar, including Eric's love interests, played by Vicki Dawson (Lisa) and Denby Olcott (Cathy).

There is one note of harshness for which you might want to prepare your pre-teen viewer: I am not in favor of giving plots away but in this case, Eric's dog is killed during one of his many attempts to attract Lisa.
