This is owing the scant crop, although in almost any ear grapes in these wine centers, of oreign varieties, command from $28 to 33 per ton. Los Angeles is sticking to ie golden meun.

Our vineyardiats fail' get the extravagant prices of the up ountry; and, on the other hand, they re not obliged to content themselves ith the $8 a ton of Fresno 03 Angeles Herald. This unqualified statement that $8 per in is the price paid for wine grapes in resno during the past season is an unjust ad uncalled tor misrepresentation, iigbt dollars was the minimum price aid, and this mostly for undesirable arieties or inferior grapes. Twenty dol- ars uer ton were paid for Zinfandel and of the more valuable varieties uring the greater part of the vintage eason. This is five dollars per ton less an has formerly been paid here. The ecline in price seems to have heen caus- by the fact that most of the wine nakers produce nearly all the grapes hat they desire to handle.

One winery his year bought most of the wine grapes reduced by small vineyardists. It is rue that the large prices paid for grapes lis season in the northern counties have ever been paid in Fresno, In fact, they ave not in any other part of the state, 'his is to some extent accounted for in ie fact that the wine makers of Napa id Sonoma counties have established a eputation for their wines which gives lem a ready market at prices in advance those which any new wine producing ection can hope to get Many of these wineries ship their products directly to astern dealers and consumers, thereby aving the cost of commission, storage, It is only a question of time when will enjoy these advantages, as ach year is more thoroughly demonstra- mg the fact that as good wines can be mde here as in any other part of the The highest prices paid in Fresno ue present season were for shipping arieties, $40 per ton being paid for able varieties ready for shipment. As a natter of fact, the Fresno vine growers an as well afford to sell their grapes for 20 or even $15 per ton, as can- those of lie northern counties at frow $30 to $40 er ton when the difference in the yield er acre and the prices of the land on Fhich the grapes are produced are taken nto consideration. Anotner MuaselJSlpugn Tragedy. The recent attempted eviction of sellers on MusseJ SJougb Jands has ended a many anticipated, in a bloody and atal tragedy.

The history of the entire juggle for the occupancy of those lands might be written in the life-blood of Us ictinis. A dispatch from Hanford under ate of Nov. 6th, gives the following par- culars of the assasination of Edward H. IcAuliffe, who was left in charge of the and from which Marshal Drewlastweek jected a settler by the uaine of Cockrell: 'Hanford was thrown into a fever of scitement soon after 9 this morn- ng by the news brought in by William Clough that Edward McAuHffe, who, with James H. Riley, had been left by lie Marshal in charge of Cockrell's land or the new claimant, Mr.

Knos of Sac- amento, was founu dead on the ranch ais morning, evidently shot by a rifle. An immediate visit to the scene of the ragedy developed the following facts: iIcAuliffe's body was found about a quar- er of a mile north of the Cockrell house, airty yards east of a dense line of wil- owa along a sand slough and 200 yards outh of the road leading to Hanford. Us powerfully built form lay on Us ack, a bullet-hole showing in his clothes iear the heart and another under the ight arm. He had evidently fallen there nd died without a struggle. There were 0 tracks near him.

His hat lay near is UeUd and a double-barreled shotgun, ocked and loaded, lay near bis right Ide. A faithful dog lay guarding the ead, one that belonged to the place hav- ng been ieft there by Fretwell, brother- n-law of Cockrell, who lived here last iinimer. McAuliffe was about 80 years old, a ingle man and a paper ruler by trade, parents live on the corner of Twenti- 'h and Hampshire streets, San Franisco. His brother, Jack McAuIirfe, a ugilist, who lately fought the colored aan Bill "Williams, the "California Giant," as a saloon Irigb up on Geary street. At ie coroner's inquest this afternoon six xterior bullet-wounds were found on the ody; two near the heart, one on his glit side, three in the back, apparently ie work of at least three rifle-shots, liley says he saw no man on or near the lace yesterday or last night.

This deed involved ia jnystery. There is no clue nd suspicion is fastened on no one. It is clearly proved at the CoroDer's in- uest this afternoon that Mr, Cockrell, hose land these men occupied, was in ianford during the afternoon and even- tg, and spent last night with a relative 1 Hanford." Gertrude Items The Teacher's Institute. The twelfth annual county teacher's natitute has been in session at the public chool building since Tuesday morning, it has undoubtedly been to thesevea- y-five teachera present the most inter- sting, enjoyable and creditable institute ver held in the county. Did not our mited space prohibit it we should pub- ish, at least, a synopsis of the proceed- ngs.

Muchcreditisdae County nt Hawkins for 80 successfully carrying hrough this, the first session of the in- titute over which he has Had control, while to Prof. Braly is probably due the 'Ighest praise for the rare skill and tact ie has shown in the management of the Dslitute- Prof. Braly is a talented teacher, in easy and graceful speaker, and during he institute has encouraged all the teach- ra to speak freely, while always ready" with pertinent suggestions, he did not, as mported instructors hare been wont to lo, bore the institute with long, weary- Qg speeches. The institute was visited by a large iUinbor of town people and visitors from various parts of the county. Frof.

Braly lectured at the M. E. church last evening, after which, we understand the teachera had a social re- non and fannquet at the Grand Cent- 1 Hotel. The Supervisors. The Board of Supervisors this week called an election for tbe 10th iast.

In the matter of the railroad tax cases Tlios. Waggoner was appointed to mee representatives of other County Boards a Francisco OR the 10th for a consideration of the matter of carrying the cases to the Supreme Court.

Super visor Covell made a motion that th the expense of ihe count? be limited ii $500 in the event of making an appeal The motion was rejected, and Mr. Wag genet was unrestricted as to the amoun of expense the county shall incur in matter. The Pople's Railway. From a letter from the President this corporation to Captain, J. A.

Ew ing, secretary of the local Board of thi county, we learn that the Company ha completed a contract for a constructs locomotive and other equipments to delivered at Oakland February 15th, a which time it is anticipated that wor will have been actively begun. The Com pany has permanently fixed the rou across the Sierras into the San Joaqui valley at Walker's Pass, Kern county. The Enterprise mill is runoin flgaing ad will doubtless make a very success- ul run as there is a large quantity of ore the dump and plenty ot water. The Hamilton mine has been sold and he new proprietors are erecting a mill nd making exlmsive preparations to run ie mine on a large scale the future. hundred tons of ore from this mine are emg crushed at the McDonald mill.

A car-load of ore is being "packed 1 own from Mount Raymond to Fish amp for shipment and it is confidently redicted that as soon as it can be worked nd its real value demonstrated to the ncredulous, that the mines in that local- will find a ready sale at remunerative gures. Mrs. who has long catered suc- essfully to the wants ot the hungry deni- ens of Gertrude, has removed to the lats with her family and taken charge a restaurant at that place. The fall term of the public school at lis place closed last Thursday and uite a number of the patrons of the chool were present to witness the clos- ng exercises. We believe the school as given very general satisfaction.

The cold, merciless winter is settling own over the hills that surround Gerrude and the dwellers in the valley pou whom we have gazed with pity ot unmixed with scorn during the long, ot months of summer now have the smile us. Tiie summer loveliness and the mammoth squash, the tourist and the arly watermelon have gone together, nd in harmony with decaying nature nd the dying year this Gertrude item actory will be closed for the season. The AlmigBty Tourist. It takes an English tourist to buck ie Kailroad Company off the track, ince the line of stages between Madera nd Tosemite have been taken off, the Company have been transport- ng their passengers via. the Merced oufe.

Last weefc a company of fire Eag 1 sh tourists enroute for Yosemite arrived Madera, and holding tickets over that oute positively refused to accept rrans- ortation by the Slerced route. After a ejeat deal of telegraphic "back talk" etween the tourists and the railroad eadquarters, the railroad managers were orced to yield and furnish private con- eyance to the valley, for the five invin- ibles. A railroad com mission of English ovirists is what is needed this country. In answer to an article in the Stockton Herald, in which the writer claims that pricots, prunes, cannot be success- ully grown in sections where irrigation essential, Mr. I.

H.Thomas, the well- nown Visalift nurseryman, makes the ollowing challenge through the columns the Journal: "That we will make a rnii exhibit next season from Tulare nd Fresno counties, as against any other wo counties in the state, of apricots, aclies aad nectarines, to be decided by committee from counties not interested, he loser to donate from $2.50 to $500 some charitable institution, or to aid ome horticultural society, as would be if the moat benefitto the public at large." dr. Thomas answers the HeralfSs arti- at length, giving many statistics of nterest and value to frnit growers and he public. We will reproduce his arti- in full next week. "We are informed by Mr. C.

K. Kirby, if the Sierra Park Vineyard, that his 'ines have made a very healthy and rapid growth the present season. These vinos are hut two years old, most of them from cuttings, but some of the varieties have aroduced a considerable crop of grapes, rorn which Mr. Kirby has been experimenting in wine making, the result ol which Iiag been highly satisfactory. Mr.

Kirby is particularly pleased with two varieties, the Carigaan and Grinash, which he has fifty acres planted. He is confident that bota these varieties wil rank among the most valuable of the wine grapes suited to this climate. This vineyard now has 175 acres planted to vines, forty acres of which aru raisin grapes and the balance choice varieties of wine grapes. In addition to the vine yard Mr Kirby will this season plant a small orchard, Tom Wbitlock went to San Francisco Wednesday under direction of the Boar of Fire Commissioners to get pipe ant stationary coapline with which to con ncct the engine with the water supply in the various wells. Nelson Allen, a crank barber who isa been working in town for a couple weeks, announced a free lecture at the llv Hail on iast Sunday afternoon on ie subject of magnetic light. An audi- nce of respectable size failing to respond the gentleman's liberal and cordial nvitatioD, he fired out the few boys who ad collected at the hall, and without urther ceremony shook the dust of this from bin feet and departed on the outh bound freight train for some oil where a man with an abnormal mount of chin-tiiusic in his composition better appreciated.
