LOS ANGELES Eugene O'Neill's monumental "Long Day's Journey Into Night" will be transferred from Britain's National Theater to the American television screen next season, ABC-TV programming vice president Martin Starger said this weelc.

Speaking to more than 65 TV newspaper editors at the posh Bel-Air Hotel, Starger said the Old Vic Company's three-hour and 40 rrvnute performance would be trimmed into a TV special for early 1973. He said it would run a minimum of 2 Mi hours on TV. Lord Olivier and American Constance Cummings will star. Peter Wood, who directed the Emmy-winning "Hamlet" last year, will direct "Long Day's Journey." THAT WASN'T Starger's only key announcement. With ABC-TV president James Duffy's blessing, apparently, he stole the press conference spotlight with some other big news of ABC's 1972-73 plans on specials.

Joseph Lash's Pulitzer Prize -winning book, "Eleanor and Franklin," will be the basis of a six-to-eight episode limited series. David Susskind will produce it, Franklin D. Roosevelt Jr. will be consultant, and Lash's new "Eleanor: The Years Alone" will also be included in developing the mini-series. JACK PAAR will begin next season a series of annual hour specials over a five-year run.

First is "Three Remarkable Women," Paar's meetings with showbiz star Mary Martin on her Brazil plantation, British animal expert Dr. Jane Goodall In Africa, and Mrs. Ethel Kennedy at her Hickory Hill, home. Producer Herbert Brod-kin has been signed to supervise the creation of four original ABC contemporary dramas for next TV-Radio Briefs Chess Match The world chess tournament (Boris Spassky vs. Bobby Fischer), due to be colorcast over Channel 48 Sunday from 1 to 6 p.

has a unique story behind it. The action will take place In Reykjavik, Iceland. The telecast, however, will originate from New York. Shelby Lyman, a master chess player and instructor, will receive the play-by-play in New York via teletype. He will then duplicate the moves on a demonstration chess board.

On a second board, he will demonstrate alternate and counter moves to clarify what is going on. The game the first of the series could go on for five hours, or It could be somewhat shorter. Experts will also be on hand to provide commentary and further clarifications. Redd's Slumber In Los Angeles, NBC-TV tried to impress TV newspaper editors this week with a press handout on Redd Foxx's sleeping habits by placing in their hotel rooms a blue pillowcase with a likeness of the a Son" star printed on it. In nightclubs Redd finds it best to sleep in two stretches of four hours each during the day.

Now that he is back filming his Friday night TV show, he has to get into the habit of sleeping through the night once again. "Sanford" starts its first full season in September.
