liar tily Jewish Law orps invades ivien-ui A NOW 'Somebody's Got To Stand Up Men's Sanctuary' talkin' to me and he almost had me convinced that I was wrong and they should be in there drinkin', just like they's men. "So I offered to buy 'em a beer if they wanted one, even though the women were sure ugly. "BUT ONE of them started to take a picture with the camera. Shoot, you shouldn't po in a bar and take someone's picture. A fella in a bar might not want his picture taken, dependin' on who might be lookin' for 'im.

I mean, you wouldn't go in a bar and ask a stranger his name, would you? "So he started grabbin' for the camera and naturally I stepped in to give him a hand. I figured we'd push them out of the bar. "Shoot, somebody's got to stand up against this kind of stuff. It's a men's sanctuary. We wasn't bother-in' nobody.

I was just drinkin' my beer. "Weil, there was 100 men in that bar, but only two or three of us got in there and tried to push them out. Nobody wants to act. "We started pushin', but all of a sudden these other women started comin' in from outside. BY ABIGAIL VAN BUREN DEAR ABBY: You were asked in your column, "Is a Jew a Jew because of his religion or because of race?" You replied, "I like Ben Gurion's definition, 'A Jew is anyone who says he While Ben Gurion may be a very distinguished Jew, he is not an authority on religious matters.

Also, he is badly mistaken. The accepted Jewish law is as follows: "A Jew is a person who was born into the Jewish peoplehood by a Jewish mother and who never left his faith by accepting another religion or one who has accepted the Jewish faith by an official conver-sion-to-Judaism ceremony." In other words, a Jew is a Jew hecause of his religion, and not because of his race. Neither race nor nationality exclude anyone from becoming a full-fledged Jew. As you know, Sammy Davis Jr. Is Jewish because he converted to Judaism.

To which race does he belong? He certainly didn't change Ms race by becoming a Jew; he changed only his religion, but he remains a member of his original race. Since your column is read by many intelligent people, I think they deserve a more authoritative answer to the above question. I would appreciate it if you were to print this in your column. RABBI MOSHE M. MAGGAL NATIONAL JEWISH INFORMATION SERVICE DEAR RABBI: Thank you for a more authoritative answer to an oft-asked question.

I am amazed to learn that Ben Gurion's definition of a Jew was something less than "kosher." DEAR ABBY: Here is the situation. The father is a professional man who is not always able to have dinner with his family. So when he comes home around 8 or 9 p. should his 15-year-old daugthter call "Hello" from her bedroom? Or to show respect should she come down and say hello to him face to face? And if she doesn't come out of her room for the next half hour or so, would you say she was not showing proper respect? NAMELESS DEAR NAMELESS: Don't confuse "respect" with obedience. Children can be "trained" to obey an order, which may give the illusion of "respect," but the only respect that means anything is that which is earned.

Since Papa is obviously annoyed because daughter doesn't give him a more affectionate welcome home, somebody (like Mamma) should wise her up without making a big deal out of it. DEAR ABBY: I don't see what the controversy over sex education in the schools is all about. It's the parents who need the education, not the children. After all, it's the parents who are always asking, "Is that a boy or a girl? I can't tell the difference." SALLI BY MIKE ROYKO Chicago Daily News Service CHICAGO When John Jolly comes up from Texas to visit the in-laws, lie always drops in at Berghoff's men-only bar for some dark beer. They don't have dark beer in Irving, and John Jolly loves dark beer.

Being a Texan, he also likes the relaxed, old-wood-and-leather, manly atmosphere of Berghoff's bar, a loop landmark. NOT THAT he doesn't like women. He likes them fine. He even married one. But once in awhile he likes to belly up to a bar and have a drink with the boys, 'thout any women fussin' roun'." So, last Thursday John Jolly excused himself from his in-laws and moseyed on down to Berghoff's and was sipping dark beer and minding 'his own business.

It was a good feeling, kind of like those tall, lanky Texas wranglers must have had when they finished a long, dusty cattle (drive and ambled into the saloon to wet their whistles. Being 5 feet 8 and an accountant, John Jolly never punched cattle, but it was still, pleasant sipping dark beer in Berghoff's. "MAN, I TELL you, they were huge women. I mean, they look like women wrestlers. They looked so mean I thought they was animals.

I felt like I was being physically attacked. "I got hold of this one and I was holdin' my ground any maybe even gainin' a toehold, when she starts chewin' on my hand. "She sunk them teeth of hers right into the butt of my hand, below the small finger here and starts chewin' like I was a five-dollar steak. "I told her: 'Lady, you ain't much of an American, actin' this "I finally got my hand out of her mouth. Then the police came and there was a big fuss, but nobody was arrested or nothing like that.

Will With A Wav Cloudy Varnist "I WRAPPED a napkin around my hand and the boys at the bar greeted me like a champ. But why didn't they "help out? They just stood around. They didn't come through in the clutch. "I had to go to the hospital to get a tetanus shot. I was afraid I might die.

That woman had a jaw like a wolf. "Boy, I'll tell you this: If I had it to do over again, I'd bust her one good one, that damn, red-eyed female." Mr. Jolly is on his way back to Texas by now. But he'll be coming back and when he does, he intends to drink dark beer in Berghoff's again. "It won't be the same said.

"I won't be able to relax, thinkin' they might come through the door, their fangs showin'." off the rubbing compound with a cloth saturated with mineral spirits and dry. Wax the surface to restore gloss. If this method fails, refinishing the woodwork will be necessary. I refinished a chest of drawers and applied stain to the inside of the drawers. The stain rubs off on the clothes.

Mrs. F. R. Furniture or wood stains are not designed to be used alone. For a fast finishing job use shellac.

Thin shellac by adding an equal quantity of denatured alcohol. Apply two coats of shellac, allowing ample drying time between coats. Shellac will seal the stain into the wood and prevent it from rubbing off. THE CINCINNATI ENQUIRER FOR Wednesday, January 7, 1970 is 17 Got a question? JOHN WAS on his third glass when the women came in. He stood there with his mouth open. The women were the intense, straight-haired University of Chicago types. They were from the National Organization for Women (NOW), which is for total female equality. They were there to protest the maleness of Berghoff's Bar and its alleged refusal to serve one of their members.

One of them had a camera. The plan was to photograph anyone who wouldn't sell them a drink. THE SIGHT of them brought John Jolly's blood to a boil. There aren't women like that back in Irving, Tex. He felt like he was in the Alamo, with his back to the wall.

"I told one of 'em that she didn't have an American accent and that she didn't sound like an American to me. "Then this skinny fella who was with 'em, he had long hair like Jesus, he came in and he started GVVas Harry Belafonte ever a member of a Harlem gang? And did he get into trouble? Tish Prince, Carnegie, Pa. A "When I was 13, I'd fight at the drop of a hat, but I refused to carry a weapon," Harry told me. "We had gang wars, went into rival neighborhoods and broke windows. Some of the guys would steal cars not to sell or anything, just for joy rides.

During gang fights they'd toss garbage cans off roof tops and do all kinds of insane things. A couple of the boys I used to run with went to jail. But I was lucky to have a father and mother who tried to instill in me certain values and attitudes of a high nature. Though mother was a domestic and father a seaman, away a lot, they gave me a healthy philosophy which has endured all my life. After I got out of the Navy, I worked as a janitor's assistant, making the fire, banking it, picking up the garbage and stacking it for collection.

One of the tenants, as a gratuity for sending up heat, gave me two tickets for the American Negro Theater in Harlem. I knew then that the theater was what I wanted." In those Readers Digest sweepstakes-by-mail, you have to check a YES or a NO on the outside flap of the return envelope. Are the NO's thrown away? L. P. Morey, Williamsburg, Mass.

No. The yes and no provide a quick clue as to what entries are subscribers or just going along for the free six-cent ride. Forcing anyone to buy a magazine to be eligible for a prize would violate a Federal law. Lotteries are illegal through the mail. G)Does JacJ.ie Gleason ever talk about the days when he was poor? Ed Allinson, Syracuse "I was never poor," Jackie asserts.

"My mother was poor, but I never knew it. I always had everything I wanted as a kid. I know my mother's sacrifices made it possible but I never poor." BY WILL WARREN After cleaning varnished woodwork with ammonia, the varnish turned cloudy. Can I restore it? Mrs. G.

F. All varnishes are not bloom-resistant. Success in removing the bloom from the varnish depends on the type of varnish, strength of the ammonia solution and the length of time the ammonia remained on the surface. Tack a piece of felt to a hand-sized wooden block and moisten the felt with furniture cream or oil. Dip the felt face of block into 4-X pumice.

Rub the block over the varnish in long straight strokes, always following the grain of the wood. If the bloom disappears, wipe BY HY GARDNER Which heavyweight champ got the most money per minute for defending his title? Daniel Drews, Chicago This will create controversy. According to published sources, Sonny Liston's share of the combined TV and "live" gross from his second fight with Floyd Patterson, in Las Vegas on July 22, 1963, which he won in an official two minutes, 10 seconds, came to around $661,800 per minute. As the loser, Patterson received an identical slice of the pie. Each fighter was paid about six times the pre-TV record rate at which Jack Dempsey flattened Firpo in 1923 getting only $118,750 per minute for three minutes and 57 seconds of work.

On the other hand. Jack could keep most of his. You recently revealed that three members of General Her-shey's famliy are serving in Vietnam. Was he himself ever more than a desk officer? And about how many American boys were drafted while he was director of Selective Service? V. Wolin, Alameda, Calif.

The general estimates that about 15 million men were inducted since he was first appointed deputy director of Selec-. tive Service in 1940. Hershey himself served in the Mexican border campaign with General Pershing In 1916 when the Army was ordered to invade Mexico to pursue the raider Pancho Villa. In World War I he served as adjutant to an artillery regiment, with the grade of captain. (3) Are there any TV shows left other than news and sports which are presented live, so we see it as it's happening instead of on tape? Nickey McCasland, San Antonio The Ed Sullivan show is the only live, prime-time entertainment show on network TV at present.

It has been live since it made its debut on June 20, 1948. It is the only entertainment program that still does 39 original shows each season. Most other series do 26 shows and then I heard that some of the youngsters who played in the movie, "Lord of the Flies," actually went crazy because they got so involved in their roles. Any truth to this? Joan Modzel, Germantown, Mrt. A "Everyone already knows that actors are crazy!" comment the producers.

"Seriously, though, the boys in the movie were not actors and did not go insane. They were selected by director Peter Brook because he wanted candor which only nonpros could supply. They made the film on a Caribbean island over their sum: mer vacation from school." Has television turned out to be a stepping stone to the big screen? Cindy Gower, Ragland, Ala. Yes, a giant step. Chris Jones, one of the hottest young actors around In the Streets" and "Ryan's started out as TV's Jesse James.

Steve McQueen began as a TV star. "Laugh-In's" Goldie Hawn is co-starring in the film version of "Cactus Flower." And "Marooned," the new astronaut epic, features no less than four converts from the small screen: David Jans-sen, Jim Franciscus, Lee Grant and Dick Crenna. Is there any precedent for the TV ban on cigarette advertising? Has any firm ever voluntarily refused to sell or advertise products? Cathy Great Neck, N. Y. The world-famous Canadian department store empire, Eaton's has never sold tobacco except to soldiers during the war.

Nonsmoking Methodist founder, Timothy Eaton, established that policy a hundred years ago and his grandson, John David Eaton, continues it. "Anyway," JDE observed recently, "there's not much money in it." Another example: Cyrus T.
