M. THOUGHTS OP i opening days of spring, when nature rst responds to the genial influences of nshlne and balmy breezes, when tlie ees put forth their swelling buds aod arden and plain are carpeted with colors rare and buwilderiug beauty aud the ring poet comes forth from his htrlike thing ot lift 1 people of good taste with- ut exception commence to improve and eautify their surroundings' The back- ard accumulations of the past winter removed, the lawn and walks are eancd and repaired, and flowers, shrubs and trees are planted to enhance the aauty aud comfort of the surroundings home. Owners and occupants of busi- ess houses also, who are known for their nterprise, public spirit or even common ecencj at this season ot the year uni- ersally renovate and cleau up their remises and take (lie necessary sanitary recautions pending the approach of hot eather. We are glad to say there many such people in Fresno, as is mply testified by the handsome and itily arranged grounds of many homes nd the scrupulously clean surroundings many places of business. There are, iwever, many notable exceptions, and is to these we desire to call attention, iid to urge the necessity of a speedy and eneral cleaning-up of these places that iw disgrace the town and if left uudis- rbed during the approaching summer ill endanger the lite of every resident, ome people seem to imagine that it is eir privilege to live like hogs, regard- ss of the otfense and discomfort it may to their neighbors.

They appear to elight in the filth and miasmatic stenches rising from overflowing cesspools and aek yards filled with decaying debris of rery conceivable character, from cast off othing to kitcheu slops aud dead cats. aey utterly fail to realize that this is ot agreeable to people who are used to ifferent surroundings. If these people annot be induced by moral suasion to ease these violations of tlie laws of ealth and observe some rules of common ecency, there is but one course to be in the matter. Their neighbors or ime interested parties must complain to ie authorities and have the imilaria- reedinj conditions remedied. Every tizen should consider it his duty to it that his locality is free from these aogerous conditions.

The poetical and ndsome days of spring-time bring with em many things of practical uature, nd nono are of more importance than ose which affect the health of a corn- unity. Miss "WiLLAiiu's regret iftt our local space is so far taken up lis week as to make it impossible to even a brief review of the temper- ice lecture delivered at the M. E. Chuich outh on Thursday evening by Miss, raucis Willard. The lecturer's reputa- on as a public speaker had preceded er, and notwithstanding the very un- easant character of the weather the urch was packed to its greatest capa- ty.

The opening exercises, consisting au address of welcome by Rev. P. M. icktes, aa original poem by Hon. J.

ones, solos by Mrs. Potter and Mrs. uttle and a. couple ot quartettes, was ery creditably performed indeed. Miss illard's address was quite lengthy, Ilowing as it did a program of consul able length, but the audience was held close attention to the subject until the ose.

Miss Willard is a pleasingspeaker, id interesting 1 without displaying any tternessor vindictiveness towards those tio may differ with her. She was ac- impanied by her traveling companion, iiss Gordon, and Mrs. Congdon, Secrc- ry of W. C. T.

U. of California. At close of the lecture a commtitee of dies was appointed, representing the 'flerent orthodox churches of the citv, meet Miss Willard at the Ogle House 9 A. Friday morning, to make pre- minary arrangements for the orjianiza- on of a Woman's Christian Temperance nion in this city. ECCLESIASTICAL or enn, the evangelist, made a rather scri- us charge against the moral tone of lia community the other night when he id that he hacJ traveled all over the ates of Missouri aud Texas and through her districts which have a world-wide putation for general cussedness and ickedness of a nigh grade, and that he id never before struck as tough a place Fresno and had never before addressed ill behaved au audience.

We do not now what provocation tho reverend geu- eman may have had to call forth these itter words of disapproval, but we do now that he has had courtesies extended him by the church and people of resno, aud that on this account, if no her, the remarks were not in very good iste. Out of regard for the reverend entleman's high calling THE REPUBLI- vs will not question the motives that ituated the imputation. Major Penn is ere for the ostensible purpose of snatcli- ig sin-cursed souls like brands from the burnings, and in these efforts we ould not for worlds lay a straw in his ay. We would suggest to th that in this manner of dealing ith a sin-burdened community he has ardly shown that degree of Christian tiarity that at all times characterized im of whom he is a professed disciple, ie meek and lowlv of mankind. A WISE Morel, formerly of the Edge Hill vineyard, Napa ounty, and one of the prominent wine lakers of California, was visiting Fresno ie early part of this week.

"Being a ountryman and friend of the French Agricultural Commissioner, Henry Gros- eao, he hau received from Mm, severa' nvate letters in regard to this county nd its eminent adaptabilty for the pro- uction of wine and raisins, and came to ee for himself. He confessed upon his rrival that the real estate men and wim makers of the northern counties hue irejudiced him considerably against thii ounty. A few days of investigation lowever, was sufficient to dissipate an) lotibt about Fresno becoming a wine district that will, in a short time, not be urpassed by even Portugal or Spain with which Mr. Morel is well icqaainted. He is so well pleased tha ie admits its superiority to Napa county and the probabilities are that he wil shortly return to Fresno and locate per manently.

THE REPUBLICAN aa the recipient ot the compliments of estimable couple in the shape of veral bottles of "extra dry," etc. We in with their friends in tlie best wishes future happiness. Why should Fresno not have a picnic? The months of April and ay are the most pleasant of all the year outdoor celebrations, and with its imerous societies and social orgamza- ons to take the lead in these matters, resno should certainly not allow all the ilmy days of spring-time to pass by ithout at least devoting one day to creation outside the dusty streets and vay from the noise and turmoil of town- fe. THE REPUBLICAN modestly suggests tlie various societies of Fresno that they jite on some place and have a general ay-day picnic. But don't all speak at nee, please.
