"HOW DOES MRS. FOSS feel about moving from Beverly Hills (Southern California) and its sunny clime to the slightly-more-wintry Buffalo, New York?" I asked him. "Cornelia-? Why she seems quite pleased with the prospect After all, we havent really had a Beverly Hills residence since the disastrous fire of November, 1961.

Our home went up in flames, with many others. Christopher, our young son, will undoubtedly adjust himself very well to the Great Lakes area and our daughter, Eliza well, she really lsnt eligible to vote on such matters yet! ZANUCKS RKO GRAND Rettrvad Saah Now aa 7 DAY: "BARABBAS" "A He really is one of our most remarkable American musicians. And I use the word "musician" in the same way it was used in the phrase "le musiclen francais when it referred to the Master Tone-Poet, Claude Debussy. Lukas Foss Is talent unencumbered with over-weening self-esteem; he will reject no new Idea until he has tested it. But neither will he discard a good Idea simply because it la "old." Take the Idea of improvisation, for example; most musicians agree that It Is a lost art. Not too long ago, Lukas Foss got together with several other musicians and organised an "improvisatory1' group.

"There was no reason' why only Jazz musicians should have the fun and adventure and edification and satisfaction of improvisation!" Mr. Foss said. "Our 'classical' improvisatory ensemble met with such success on Its tours that we couldnt nearly satisfy the demands for bookings. "The most sophisticated audiences in the most 'high-brow music centers of Europe, for example, seemed to find the Idea of spontaneous Improvisation irresistible. The only country where we laid an egg (I must confess) was Italy where we made the mistake of trying to Improvise madrigals on an old text It Just didnt register'; the audience actually burst into laughter!" "The main point to this improvisation idea is to bring the performer whether or not he is a virtuoso closer to the composer's 'workshop'.

"THE PERFORMER has been chained too long to the printed note," Mr. Foss continued, vehemently. "On the other hand, improvisation can never take the place of composition-craft; it must work WITH, not contrary to, the more formal creative ideas of composition." Mr. Foss, incidentally, will expound these exceedingly Impressive (and important) Pa And Daughter Here's father-daughter dormitory commencement scene from the Broadway comedy hit, Take Her, She's Mine." I dont mean to Imply that Lukas Foss is going to do anything so sensational as divert Niagara Falls into the Buffalo concert hall; but he Is going to embark on a program of expansion, both, as to the size of the orchestra and the scope of its programs.

ATA VERY INFORMAL press luncheon Wednesday 'the stUl-quite-young but world-famed composer-conductor-pianist, who is in town to conduct our orchestra this weekend during the absence of Maestro Max Rudolf, made It crystal-clear that there would have been no point in his accepting the post of Buffalo Philharmonic maestro (to succeed Josef Krlps, moving to San Francisco to succeed Enrique Jorda) unless he could be assured (more or less) musical carte blanche. LUKAS FOSS, with his black hair and expressive blue eyes, is a delightful person to Interview. Ideas pour out of him like an upset pitcher. But with this His ideas dont run into the ground as wasted material; they form rivulets which Join brooks which Join rivers which flow into a great ocean of thought and achievement WWTS at tiM MAT.
