Saline County buys two diesel truck-tractors The Saline County Commission has purchased two 1979 diesel truck-tractors from Stewart International, at a cost of $41,673.60. Stewart's successful bid includes trade-in of three 1975-model gasoline tandem trucks from the county's highway department.

Commissioners rejected a low bid of $41,533.41 from Wheels Unlimited of Kansas, because those trucks did not meet specifications drafted by County Engineer Wes Moore. The other bid was from White Trucks Sales and Service for $75,600 for two 1980 models. Money to purchase the truck-tractors will come from the county's road and bridge fund. They will be used primarily to haul gravel. Moore recommended the county move to larger, diesel-powered trucks, based on his study comparing gasoline tandem trucks and diesel truck-tractors.

Two gasoline tandems, Moore said, will haul the same load as one diesel truck-tractor. Assuming the county will pay $1 per gallon for diesel fuel and gasoline, Moore estimates the county eventually may be able to save $18,667 annually for fuel with the diesel trucks. His estimates are based on each truck logging 40,000 miles a year by drivers earning $13,500 annually. Other annual savings expected on diesel conversion would be $13,500 on labor, $10,560 on depreciation and major repairs, and $400 on tires. JT I Hospital Admissions Asbury Dale Wood, 422 E.
