With the 4-H'ers Meetihe Guys and Gals to Carry Utah's Colors to Chicago By John Stewart Extension Editor Utah Stets Apricoltorel Cellos DEJA HAND 17 daughter of Mr and Mrs Merrill Hand of Draper won in home improvement her trip sponsored by the Roebuck foundation A club member five years she has successfully completed seven projects most of them in home improvement and sewing She decorated her own been her mother Mrs Mildred Younker and Mrs Quayle ALENE GIBSON daughter of Lila Gibson of Cedar City It 1 for food preparation won the trip sponsored by Setvel Inc She also has a tegistered steer Was awarded a gold medal for placing in the blue ribbon class in a luncheon preparation at the 1949 State fair A dress she made this year won a blue ribbon and medal in the Iron county fair and was exhibited at the State fair as was a canning project Her club leader has been Mrs Helen Jones JOANNA JOHNSON daughter of Mrs Zelli-Johnson of Springville is a dress revue winner the trip sponsored by Simplicity Pattern Co' She won with a turquoise taffeta formal and white felted wool evening tkekt For accessories $12 It was judged at the 4-H dress reVue at the 1949 State fair 1 eltXTEEN happy Utah boys and girls reaching the top of the 4-H club ladder are eagerly awaiting trips to the 1949 national -club congress in Chicago Nov 27 through Dec 2 Each of Utah's 8400 club members has carried one or more projects in agriculture or -home economies during the past summer Of all these the 16 holding train tickets to the windy city were adjudged to have done the best job on their the competition was mighty keen At Chicago they will hob-nob with winning delegates from each of the other states and territories of the United States An excellent program of education and entertainment has been arranged for them at the congress to be held in the huge Stevens hotel Each boy and girl making the AStato Itinmeniatersimo ect for which a private company sponsors the trip State winners in other projects are also eligible providing they win in western regional competition While the nine girls and seven fellows making the trip from Utah are packing their grips here's a brief thumbnail sketch on each DARLEEN BUNKER daughter of Mr and Mrs Edward Bunker of American Fork won in health under sponsorship of Kellogg Co Starting club work in 1942 she has been in a number of sue- eessful food and clothing clubs givings pee I al emphasis to foods and nutrition RONALD JENSEN 17 of Benjamin in Utah county ha done especially outstanding work in sugar heels His other leading- projects have been in sweet corn and fat beef Ronald who is the son of Mr and Mrs RaYnold Jensen has been engaged in 4-11 work for six years: He is sponiored by International Harvester Co GAYLEN PEDERSEN who lives out on Redwood road south of Salt Lake City is also a six-year member and is now 16 years -old His most outstanding work has been done in gardening whith his leaders describe as "excellent" He also has been an- assistant leader and a consistent winner at the Utah State fair His parents are Mr and Mrs Oliver Pedersen Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Co is his sponsor HARRY PAPAGEORGE also 16 hails from Farr West or 3 Ogden Tractor maintenance is his forte although he has also done a lot with dairying He is maintaining the family's tradition by following in the footsteps of his brother Jimmy who went back to the 4-11 congress last year They are sons of Mr and Mrs Alex Papageorge The Utah Oil Refining Co is Harry's sponsor i room and helped with other house furnishings and has won blue ribbon awards at county and state fairs DONNIA ASHTON daughter of Mr and Mrs Orvil Ashton Provo 2 won in better methods electric 'with the trip sponsored by Westinghouse She has been in club work for five years and also served as a club leader this past summer EE ANDERSON 17 son of Austin Anderson of Kingston Piute county won on meat animals and his trip is sponsored by Wilson and Co Since starting 4-H work he has had one reserve champion steer recetved first in showmanship contest won a steer at the Salt Lake City Junior Livestock show -and caught onrinACalf scramble at Cedar City VERN ASHCROFT 18 son of Ashiroft of Hyde Park won in dairying his trip sponsored by Utah dairy companies He has been in 4-11 five years and says "I am very interested in the dairy business My work is giving me much pleasure and information as well as some nice projects I can now take my place In the management of our 50-acre farm and our dairy herd of purebrecL cattle When I get ready to go into business for myself I'll have a small dairy herd of my own" RI WAED HECKMANN Providence won in poultry and is sponsored by Dearborn Motors Co He started his project by salvaging lumber from a fallen down barn and garage I to build a brooder coop then bought 300 chickens and raised them He has also had 4-H fruit projects DEL RAY CAMPBELL HI son of Mrs Vera Campbell of Providence won a meat animal trip sponsored by Cudahy Packing Co In his seven years In club work his prize money has totaled $18620 and the receipts from sale of his animals has totaled 008175 NELDA COWAN daughter of Mr and Mrs George Cowan of Payson won in girl's record work Her trip is sponsored by Montgomery Ward She started 4-H when 12 years old has had successful projects in food preparation canning clothing home improvement home grounds beautification and leadership HELEN BERGESON daughter of Mr and Mrs Vern Bergeson North Logan won for canning achievement the trip sponsored by the Kerr Glass Mfg Co She has been a member of the Modern Maids' Food club for the past five years During The past four years her main club interest has been in canning Her club leaders have NYEA COLVIN 16 of Provo 2 is a safety contest winner sponsored by General Motors She wrote and helped present a radio script on fire prevention week over a Provo station: also wrote and gave a talk on safety in cold weather over the extension radio program Miss Colvin cooperated with other club members and the extension service on various farm and home safety and cleanup projects She gave safety talks in church and school and was instrumental in getting safety measures instituted in her community CHARLENE LIND daughter of Mr and Mrs Leslie A Lind of Midvale for clothing achievement won the trip sponsored by Spool Cotton A 4-H'er six years she says "I have won prizes of ribbons medals and money But these are the least of the benefitt club work has given me The development I have derived from belonging to 4-H and learning how a democratic for good measure When I came through the front door I met Evelyn O'Toole the assistant secretary and Lou Gladwell the public relations director busy with their duties but not too busy to chat about how the show was going so I started noting down mentally and otherwise some of the sights sounds and faces that met me JUST some of these were: Claude 'Staples superintendent of the Bar ranches watching the-qua rterhorse sale Col Walter of Filer Ida coinmenting on the excellence of the new sales ring where he presides as auctioneer Dorrene Atwood of Spanish Fork- -taking in the livestock exhibits James Beck Mayfield -Ida shorthorn breeder currying his bulls with loving care Alma Esplin Logan calling yearling Suffolk ewe exhibitors to the judging ring Earl France of Gooding Ida carting off a handful of fat hog ribbons Walter Holland of Dos Cabezas Ariz likewise collecting blue ribbons to add to the winnings of his Rancho Sacatal Herefords and Cattle Judge Emil Rezae methodically chewing gum while going to pen after pen of Herefords to look 'em over Also Delone Rhodes wearing a snappy white buckskin outfit and showing her Tremonton Herefords Merlin Clark busy swinging a camera Jack Murray veteran grounds superintendent proudly ting final touches on new sales ring I Largent of Markel Tex manicuring hooves of his prize Herefords Dick Richards taking time off from cattle judging to josh with Es Fjeldsted about the days when they were associate' professors of animal husbandry at Oregon State college and Cowboy Jess Cook giving me the glad hand and telling about all the
