McLain, who led the Tigers to their first pennant in 23 years, 4 is the first American League pitcher to win both awards. Don Newcombe and. Sandy Koufax, both dodgers, 'won both awards in the National League in the one year, Newcombe in 1956 and Koufax in 1963.
