28 Sunday, November 11,1990 The Salina Journal Fiesta Bowl prepared to move from Arizona Nebraska running back Scott Baldwin leaps over KU defensive back Charley Bowen during Saturday's game in Lawrence. Kansas Big Eight standings (Continued from Page 23) out in the second half with 24 points to put the game away. Backup I-back Scott Baldwin starter Leotis Flowers was home with an injured ankle broke several tackles on the way to a 67-yard score and Greg Barrios added a yard field goal to make it a 27-3 game heading into the fourth quarter. The Kansas offense, which piled up 410 yards of total offense, was dynamite between the 20-yard lines, but didn't get into the end zone until Hilleary found Vang over the middle with a 16-yard TD pass at the 13:29 mark of the final quarter. "I was shocked we moved the ball as well as we did," Mason said.

"I've watched a lot of film on (Nebraska) and no one has moved the ball like that. "But against a fine team like Nebraska, you can't make mistakes, and we did, "Mason added. "We gave up some big plays in the second half, but I thought the defense played very well in the first half." Nebraska tacked on two touchdowns in the final 10 minutes for the final margin to drop Kansas to 2-3-1 in the Big Eight and 3-6-1 overall. The loss failed to dampen the spirits of KU sophomore running back Chaka Johnson who became just the second back this season (Colorado's Eric Bieniemy the other) to rush for over 100 yards against a Nebraska defense ranked No. 4 nationally in Conference All Games 6 5 4 2 2 2 1 1 0 0 3 6 5 5 3 7 3 7 Colorado Nebraska Oklahoma towa Slate Kansas Kansas State Missouri Oklahoma St.

Johnson, a rushed for 120 yards on 16 carries as KU ran for 225 yards overall. "This game shows we can move the ball on anyone," Johnson said. "I always knew I could do it. It makes me feel great." Johnson also got an added bonus from running back coach Vic Adamle, who told him afterwards he would now be listed as KU's No. 1 tailback ahead of Tony Sands and George White, two players slowed by injuries.

Nebraska was paced by Baldwin's 170 yards on 21 carries and 222 yards of total offense from quarterback Mickey Joseph. Kansas completes its season next Saturday at home against Missouri. Nebraska will take 13 days off before playing at Oklahoma on Nov. 23. PHOENIX (AP) The Fiesta Bowl will be moved out of Arizona if No.

11 Virginia or other high-ranking teams refuse to play in the state, the chairman of the bowl's selection committee said Saturday. Don Meyers said Fiesta officials have lined up stadiums in other Sun Belt states as a precaution. He did not identify those other locations. Arizona has been stung by national criticism since Tuesday, when voters rejected by a 51-49 margin a referendum which would have created a paid state holiday honoring the late Martin Luther King Jr. As a result, NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue has recommended that the league's owners move the 1993 Super Bowl out K-State (Continued from Page 23) both offensive guards the third quarter and tackle Doug Warren didn't make the trip." The Sooners' physical defensive line sent two quarterbacks to the sidelines with five sacks good for 45 yards in losses.

Backups Jason Smargiasso and Matt Garber had little chance, going zero for seven passing. "It wasn't too safe back there," Snyder said. "We didn't have too many volunteers. We had what seemed like a hundred yards of sacks. That's a bad situation for a young offensive line to be in.

They had a hard time dealing with it." Straw did manage to complete 13 of 27 passes for 267 yards to become the 10th passer in Big Eight history. Straw finished the game with 5,078 passing yards, ninth best in Big Eight history. When Straw left with five minutes left in the third quarter and Watson departed with 14 minutes left in the game, the Wildcats' slim chances of a comeback went with them. "When I came out of the game, I was hurting pretty bad," said Straw, who had blood dotting his uniform. "My arms were hurting and I was just beat up.

I tried to throw some on the sidelines, but I couldn't. It's hard to convince yourself you can't get back in. They're a great defense that is very quick up front." Wide receiver Andre Coleman was a bright spot with four receptions for 109 yards. "They were blocking Michael Smith and a lot of times, they forget about the backside receiver," Coleman said. "This was my biggest day in college ball.

I'm just happy with myself that as a freshman I can play againat Oklahoma." When Straw struggled the first half, the Wildcats' offense went down with him. Straw missed high and outside in a one-of-nine start as KSU trailed 20-0. Tight end Russ Campbell finally got the Wildcats rolling with a 69- yard catch and carry, 30 of which came after getting slowed down at the OU 40-yard line by several de- of Sun Devil Stadium in the Phoenix suburb of Tempe. Meyers said Virginia, which had been ranked last week No. 1, was extended an invitation to the Fiesta after the Cavaliers beat North Carolina 24-10 Saturday.

An opponent has not been chosen, he said. Under NCAA rules, teams cannot formally accept bowl invitations un- til'Nov. 24. Jim Copeland, Virginia's athletic director, said it was uncertain whether the Cavaliers would accept the bid. "It (the Fiesta Bowl) has been an option we've considered all along but it's been a real difficulty working through that (the King vote) and I'm not sure we've resolved it yet," Copeland said.

Earlier this week, Virginia defensive back Tony Covington said he did not want to play in a state which would dishonor King. "It's a bowl, which is big for Virginia and big for the program, but I'd rather not go," Covington told the Newport News, Daily Press. Yusef Jackson, son of civil rights leader Jesse Jackson also plays for Virginia. Meyers said he and other bowl officials were aware of the sentiments expressed by players and faculty at Virginia, Penn State and Notre Dame about the prospect of playing in a state which gave the appearance of racism. "They're going to be looking for Arizona to do something to assure them that the kind of of atmosphere they expect should exist will exist, and if they find that kind of commitment, it'll be played here," Meyers said.

"And if they don't find that kind of commitment, then it will be played somewhere else," he said. "It is time for someone in Arizona to step forward and say, We're going to resolve this issue, and we're going to resolve it Meyers said. Meyers had said the day before that he asked Arizona Gov. Rose Mofford to call Virginia Gov. Douglas Wilder to discuss the ramifications of the King Day rejection.

Oklahoma split end Corey Warren extends to catch a pass as Kansas State defensive back Jamie Mendez closes Norman, Okla. in during Saturday's game in fenders. Straw hit Michael Smith with a four-yard touchdown strike. That came one play after Belle Plaine's Jody Kilian, a high school fullback, rumbled six yards on the "fumblerooski" play. Center Quentin Neujahr laid the football on the ground for Kilian to ramble around left end.

"When the ball was laid on the ground, I looked for the contain man to go by, then picked up the ball," Kilian said. "I got pulled down from behind." Straw completed four first half passes for 166 yards. Coleman caught two big passes for 93 yards. The Wildcats managed 24 rushing yards on nine tries. The Sooners' first scoring drive took 11 plays and covered 48 yards, 39 on the ground.

Gundy covered the final yard. After a 41-yard field goal by R.D. Lashar, the Sooners covered 80 yards on 10 plays, capped by Kenyon Rasheed's 1-yard dive for a 17-0 lead. Gundy completed three passes for 56 yards on the drive. Lashar booted a 27-yard field goal for a 20-0 lead.

The Wildcats wasted a big defensive play when Evan Simpson was flagged for a facemask on a 16-yard sack of Gundy. The Sooners gained 21 yards of field position on the flag, setting up a 14-yard dash by Dewell Brewer for a 27-7 halftime lead. Earnest Williams tacked on Oklahoma's final score after Tink Collins blocked a punt. Oklahoma's army of backs rushed for 178 yards to balance Gundy's 113- yard half. And as a bonus, they offer their own celebrity fans like John Candy, Tom Hanks, Tony Danza and Sylvester Stallone. At least the Lakers have champi- banners hanging around the Forum. The next Stanley Cup the Kings win will be their first. In some places, it's beginning to seem like you need a second mortgage to buy tickets for hockey and basketball games. LA is the top- priced sports town, but there's plenty of competition.

At least the Forum is a fairly modern building. For an up-close look at the acrobatics of Michael Jordan in ancient, barn-like Chicago Stadium, the Bulls charge $200 a seat. That's $8,600 for the season and Joe O'Neil, the club's director of tickets and stadium operations, has a waiting list with 5,000 names on it. Portland's Clyde Drexler will be making $8 million in 1995. Consider that and the Trailblazers' $150 tab to watch him from row one at courtside this season almost looks like a bargain.

In Houston, you can get close enough to shake hands with Akeem Olajuwon for the same $150. At those prices, next season's reported hike from $45 to $70 for the best seats for the NBA Knicks and NHL Rangers in New York's Madison Square Garden seems like a steal. According to Garden executives, the increases were the result of an unexpectedly costly renovation of the building that soared to $200 million, twice the original estimate. A $70 ticket puts Garden hockey and basketball $10 higher than the top price on Broadway you can see Les Miserables for that but well below the comparable price at other arenas. But the other arenas have limited tickets at those premium levels 120 seats for Laker games, 127 for the Trailblazers, etc.

At the Garden, there will be over 2,000 courtside and rinkside locations carrying the top price. They would come, of course, complete with waitress service for refreshments. You need not hock the family jewels just to go to a game, though. There are reasonably priced tickets in many arenas, especially, if you're not particular about details like seeing the game. In Boston Garden, a building with the same kind of character as Chicago Stadium, there are obstructed view seats in the balcony that afford spectators a view of one basket and about 25 percent of the famed parquet floor.

Price: $11. "They aren't the greatest, and we don't actively market them," club spokesman Jeff Twiss said. "But we'll sell a fair number of those, especially for big games." The same location and view is available at Boston Bruin hockey games for $15. The NBA expansion Minnesota Timberwolves offer a $3.50 ticket in the new Target Center the cheapest seat in either sport. Some wags suggest, however, that it entitles you to watch the Wolves from St.

Paul. If you want a closer look at the action, it's $50 to sit at courtside. But, like the LA Sports Arena, there's no Magic in Minnesota. The NHL North Stars, once a hockey goldmine, have fallen on hard times. They have been last in the league in attendance for three years, a sorry spiral punctuated by an intimate gathering of 4,646 for a game against Hartford last month.

Originally, new owner Norman Green scaled tickets in the seat Met Center from $9.50 to $50. The $50 seat is history, however, and the top price now is $28.50, previously available only in the season ticket package. For one game, all the $9.50 tickets were sold out and fans seeking them were turned away. Green got the message and ordered the number available at that price increased by 60 1,509. In almost all arenas, ticket prices have gone up.

In some cases the increase was as little as $1 boost for the cheapest seats at Cleveland Cavalier and Montreal Canadien games to the $100 jump for Laker courtside locations. Canada expects a goods and services tax increase of seven percent effective Jan. 1 that will have an impact on prices in NHL cities there. Now, if you get thirsty or hungry, that's a whole other matter. A Kosher hot dog at Chicago Stadium costs $3 and so does the 16- ounce beer you'll want to wash it down.

At Madison Square Garden, the frankfurter is also $3 but the beer costs $3.75. You can get twice the beverage 32 ounces instead of 16 and save 50 cents if you're willing to drink soda instead of beer. If you prefer something more substantial from the Garden's refreshment stands, why they'll be happy to sell you a roast beef sandwich for $6.75. And the concessionaires are quick to point out that they've held the line on nachos supreme. Just $3.75 for the second year in a row.
