Having noted that fact with respect to this district's member of Oregon's upper house we discussed this poll business ana, as our readers may remember, taking it not too seriously.

Our feeling, we have since observed, was not that of most Oregon newspapers. Just about all other editorial comment that we have seen has dwelt on the East Oregonian "journalistic enterprise" or the justice (or injustice) of the selections as reported. Now another fact of interest in connection with the poll comes to our attention. This is that the idea came from Senator Richard Neuberger and was first suggested to Larry Smyth, political editor of Jhe Oregon Journal. Smyth turned it down and now he has told why he did so.

His reasons are interesting. We think his stand is praiseworthy. He has explained it in a letter to the editor of the Pendleton paper saying; "Dear Forrester: Pardon the delay. This idea of yours was proposed.to me at the state legislature by Richard L. Neuberger and I mulled It quite a while before deciding not to try it myself.

"My views may sound altruistic but I think they are realistic. To name five outstanding men in the legislature. would be easy. To name five who are the worst could bo easy it all depends on how you want to look at it "I have lone held the belief that to criticize well-meaning people public life, even If their moves may sound screwy at the moment, is to warn decent citizens to keep away from polltl-cal life. Tod many people you and I know have said time and again, 'I wouldn't take that abuse for anything.

"After each session it has been my lot to make some speeches about the happenings at Salem. On these occasions I have found myself in a position of evaluating the personalities and it is no nice chore. There are some fine men In the legislature. This is possibly not.true in all cases but khbwo'f many where it is true. "To take' part ln your poll of newsmen would put me in a position of tiding the thing I have guarded against Namely, criticizing public officials who mean well, while I at the same time am trying to interest some of our good citizens in giving up their time and money, to get Into the political fields.
