velopment which dates back several ready to strike aggressively. The first cir sign is to be found in the anomalous situation which finds the retail trade going well during the current month but with production In the doldrum state. Heretofore Improved markets have meant Increased production. Why the different attitude today? Because the decks are being cleared for a finish fight with present economic conditions. When the bits guns the 1932 models are ready to be fii'ed, the manufacturers do not want to have to aim them through, or over, heavy stocks, of present models.

So the field Is being given a chance to meet present demand with. Just enough cars. Dealers will have no cleaning-up to do at the last minute even if it means slim looking Autumn production figures. Reasonably good sales and slow production account for but one anomaly existing in the automotive industry at present. Another Is the comparatively active buying In the face of the twin facts that new models are not many months distant and that 14 these new models are likely to be strikingly advanced In design.

This paradox Is explained In two In Detroit. One is that many persons are In the position of not being able to drive their older cars with economy and safety any longer. The other Is that many of these doubt the industry's ability to create bargains or much superior cars than those of the present. The consensus here Is that the two features of the car most likely to be affected by design advancement in 1932 are the transmission and the body. The buyer, especially the one in the position of imperatively needing a new automobile, is unable to -see much chance for improving the transmission beyond free-wheeling or syncro-mesh gear-sets, and while the bodies may be changed, whether they will be more beautiful or merely different Is a question in the minds of many.

It is a topsy-turvy situation but He fundamental factors are viewed here with considerable satisfaction and confidence. Not the least queer of the cur. rent conditions is the fact that the industry gets ready for its most spectacular competitive struggle, many of Its leaders recognize a common responsibility to take economic leadership. This attitude found concrete reflection recently in an advertisement signed by Alvan Macauley, president of the Packard Motor Car company. The names of six cars, two of them definitely competitive with the company's product, were mentioned in the text of the advertisement which exhorted the public to buy all makes of automobiles for what it would mean to Improved conditions.

The gesture is looked upon here as decidedly wholesome one. That it may be followed by general group advertising on the part of the Industry is one of the Ideas now current in Detroit. Their analysis of general conditions has convinced car makers that many who can afford now cars are not buying them out of a feeling of restraint for their individual prosperity. It Is exactly the wrong attitude, analysts believe, and one designed to seriously retard the return of better business. Speculation as to the way the Industry will line up after indl-vidual companies have finally shaped their 19S2 programs Is rife in TWrnlt.

It is an acceoted fact piloted a Chandler In 1923 and won the two cups away from other makes. "I thought I had one of the most oowerful automobiles ever years, points out E. 0. Fawcett, Again tho new alrwheel type balloon offers from two to two and a half tlmcv more surface to merely two of several now held by DeVaux. Furthermore, it has greater antl-skld properties on slick pavements. For present experimental purposes Goodyear is making this new tire In several sizes.

The tractor market for the new tire Includes golf courses, airports and citrus fruit groves. While tho development of the new tire for use on trucks and automobller is still In the experimental stage, the tire Is ready now for use on tractors. The tractor, application involves a simple change In the hub. Four type models of tractors have thus been equipped. On golf courses and airports the tractor equ'pped with these big tires does Its work without Injury to the turf or ground surface, and In tho citrus groves, where the going is soft and sandy, the broad surfaces of the tires pull both tractor and Its heavy equipment, through with ease.

built, or ever to be built, when 1 won these trophies eight years ago with a roadster," declared Hobson to E. S. Jones, sales, manager of the western, factory of the DeVaux-Hall Motors corporation. "The load conditions then were the same as those of a few flays ago. "When The TRIBUNE and Alexander offered, these challenge trophies, for competition anybody would have told you that only roadsters and touring cars could win them.

Yet the DeVaux 0-75 sport sedan I drove, went farther In high gear than any other make of automobile In tho history of the Industry. I believe this is definite proof that automobile manufacturers have made tremendous forward strides in building power Into their products." As Hobson and his three passengers completed their high gear test on Dlablo's heights they were met Continues Good Motorists continue to enjoy good travel conditions on the Redwood highway, tf. Near Laytonvllie method of engine suspension might be profitably employed with the larger and naturally smoother power-plants as well as with the Inherently unbalanced four. As a means of still further eliminating vibration, the principle may be applied in the field of larger engines. How far It will go Is a query, however, that goes without a specific answer. some work Is under way, and oiling is being done at various points. bile distributors, It is traceable to the early development of the Industry.

"Originally, one, two and a few four cylinder cars represented the first efforts of the earlier automobile manufacturers," Fawoett explained. "Progress came quite rapidly from this Infant stage, how-ever, and 1908 or 1909 found the majority of cars sold to be of the four cylinder type. "After 1912 came the vogue of the sixes. Peculiarly enough, the acceptance Of thethen new six cylinder cars wbb much slower than the previous publio recognition accorded the fours at the expense of the smaller englned Jobs of the early days. Motor cars were a luxury, both as far as demand and price were concerned, and more time was required for the new models to gain acceptance.

"A striking example of the rise of eight cylinder business as compared with the manufacture of four and six cylinder cars Is shown In the production figures of 1928, 1929 and 1980. In 1928 approximately 60 per cent of the total passenger car production was of the four cylinder type and 46 per cent of the six cylinder type. In this year approximately eight cylinder cars were produced. In 1929 the four cylinder cars claimed only about 87 per cent of the market, while approximately 57 per cent of the cars produced were of the six oyllnder type. In this year about 240,000 eight cylinder cars were produced, And In 1930 this figure Jumped to about 382,000 units, -or nearly 18 per cent of the total number of cars sold in all three classes.

Involving only brief delays. Another subject of curiosity Is whether free-wheeling and syncro it-sh represent the limit of en Kineerlne Ingenuity as it relates to transmissions. Bo far, there has been a general tendency to follow the leader and use either one of these gearset principles. -MMfJBJBJSJta. BBB).

It is frankly admitted In most quarters, however, that research for something different still Is pusned with vigor. Something bet ter than either of these Is being IITH the New Plymouth giving sought with the ultimate end in view of eliminating gearkhlftlng altogether. It may not be ready by next year but with design improvements selling cars on the scale they are today It is a certainty, that 1933 will see some further, and per haps radical, transmission prog rest). that there will be some new multl--cylinder products, perhaps at lower prices than the first trio of twelves and sixteens.
