Chief Engineer James B. Ahearn of the oil tanker Elizabeth Kellogg la realizing this, according to word Just received from New Orleans. He was arrested when the tanker arrived, there from California on charges of having thrown the ship's cat into the. Pacific ocean shortly after the gulf port. The arrest of Ahearn was made by the Louisiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, but the complaint was made by members of the crew.

The ship's cat is almost a sacred critter among sea-going men, espe daily the old shell backs of a crew. She not only keeps the craft fairly well clear of rats but Is use ful In many ther ways. For In stance, every real sailorman be lleves that pussy can predict the stats of the weather in advance and transmit this Information by wlgwagglngilt with her tall. If the tall Is carried straight up, the weather for the next 48 hours will be fair. If the tail sags, then look out for squalls.

To Injure the ships cat Is considered the worst kind of luck. Apparently that is what Chief Ahearn now believes. The fields are approximately 15 miles apart and maintained by the department of commerce. Over difficult terrain the fields are cated. With the exception of a Tery. few All rtf tVia Int armarl Into, fields along this section are lighted and equipped to take care of any emergency night landing. PATENT GRANTED.

A patent today had been granted Lionel Holland, resident of Cal- cutta, India, by the United States patent office for a plane landing aiiu uiapaiiuiiiiiH; niauiiuio vnicu uo claims will make possible the arrival and departure of standard planes In small areas or from the tops of downtown office buildings. The device resembles a huge crane, having a central mast with an arm attached at the upper end to the top of the mast. The theory of lta operation, according to the Inventor, la as follows: A plane Is attached to the lower, or free end ot the arm, and the arm rotated. Centrifugal force and the weight of the plane causes the arm to describe larger and largarTrdrcles, until sufficient speed Is attaltied for the plane to take the air when freed. In landing, the plane travels In circles around the pole until its speed conforms -with that ot the arm.

A contact Is then made and -the plane brought to earth by a I slackening of the speed of the arm, according to Holland. SUN, MOON, TIDE Br 0 8. Coaat and Geodetic Survey, (04 ritatnma Rldg. Ran franelaeo. FRIDAY, MAY 1.
