As Charles Gay, stock President, followed an old custom in personally ringing the closing gong of the" year, the bull party waj able to claim victory by a narrow margin. Year-end tax-selling for cash and the uual caution before a holiday, unsettling to prices throughout the day, left the market on a wavering note at the finush. More Issues showed plus signs than minus markers, even though active issues, represented by the Associated Piees average of 60 stocks showed a trifling .1 of a point decline at 70.0. The possibility of a spread of the already prevalent strikes in the automotive industry, with consequent repercussions in steel and other supplier of the motor concerns, was instrumental in rest rainiag tbe buying urge In many traders. Another prime bit of market news, however, failed to sway its group of stocks, the coppers gave ground more readily than most divisions in the face of a boost in domestic red metal prices to 12 cents a pound, the best quotation since June.

1930. Non-ferrous metals stocks off fractions to more than a point included American Smelting at 93'4, Kcnnecott 6C.4, Phelps Dodge 644 and Anaconda 53 Vs Most commentators felt the group had already well discounted the price increase. Some of the motor and accessory equities which gave ground included Chrysler at General Moi tors 63W, U. S. Rubber 47 -V Tim-ken 72 Steels on the downside numbered U.
