Walnuts are among our best shade trees and one or two trees will furnish a bountiful supply of nuts. Nectarines, plums and early peaches brighten the spring landscape with their lovely blooms. A few grapevines make a good covering for an arbor or wall and the fact that they yield an 'additional pleasure In their fruit by no means detracts from their appearance. The American or "slip-skin" varieties of grapes such as Concord, Pierce and Isabella are especially good for planting in the Eastbay section, as they are usually free from mildew and mature satisfactorily in our comparatively cool Climate. Fruit trees should be planted tn January and February for best results.

Although they may be safely planted until April 1 if given special care, they cannot be expected to make as rapid growth as the earlier planted trees. When purchasing fruit trees it Is a good idea to have your nurseryman prune them ready for planting unless you have had some experience in this line. Most amateurs fall to prune their young trees sufficiently and the result is that some trees-fall to grow the first summer after planting. Tour nurseryman will be glad to do this pruning for you or to give you the enecessary instructions so that you can do It yourself Campaign Started Against Accidents The East Bay Municipal Utility District has launched a campaign against accidents within its own organization, according to an announcement by Frank W. Henna, chief engineer and general manager of the district.

Henna said that the total number of automobile accidents up to December first among utility district owned machlnea is eighty-five against fifty-six for the same period of last year, an Increase of fifty-two per cent. During November there were eleven automobile accidents as against seven for November, 1929. Oakland Will Send Delegates Oakland and Alameda county am- 'ii Importance of For Shade By GKOKGK C. ROEDING President, California Nursery Co. The home owner who has only a limited space In which to make his planting should give more thought to the selection of fruit trees.

Too often their value for shade and ornamental purposes Is overlooked in considering their viewpoint. The first consideration of course Is the fruit for the family table. Fruit taken direct from the tree Is far superior to that purchased in the market, and the thought that the fruit Is picked from one's own trees adds lost to the eating. lly exercising a little care a constant supply of. fruit may be had from a few trees.

Cherries are ripe In May; late cherries and early peaches. In June; apricots and plums. In July; pears and late peaches. In August; figs and fall apples. In September; with grapes and winter apples and pears hold ing on throuKh October and early November.

The small fruits, such as strawberries, raspberries ana blackberries, will fill In the gaps between the larger fruits so that one can always pick fresh fruit from his own gardon from May until November. Fruit trees should be a feature of the popular outdoor living room. Apricots, apples and cherries grow quite rapldlyand provide shads for the hot summer days.
