FRIDAY, APRIL 26, 2002 METRO Obituaries Dick Wellinghoff thrived on taking care of others Retired bond trader worked tirelessly for charities By Rebecca Billman The Cincinnati Enquirer Richard F. "Dick" Wellinghoff, a retired bond trader for Merrill Lynch and tireless volunteer for several local charities, died of cancer Monday at his Hyde Park home. The Enquirer honored Mr. Wellinghoff, 86, as a "Hometown Hero" in December 1997 for his volunteer work. He spent many hours every week distributing meals at Mercy Franciscan St.

John Social Center in Over-the-Rhine and Tri-State Harvest in Mount Lookout. A board member fOur Daily Bread, he also delivered meals for the soup kitchen's "Lunch on Legs" program, and was a courier for Hoxworth Blood Center. "He had a real positive spirit about him and seemed to thrive on helping others," said John Romer, a fellow board member of Our Daily Bread. In fact, he continued his work up until about two months ago. Mr Wellinghoff kept an upbeat attitude, often admonishing others to "nev- er lose your sense of humor, said his daughter, Susan Tenant of Chicago.

A friend, Don Rohde of Mount Lookout, said, "'You can't help but smile when you think of Dick WellinghMr. Wellinghoff off." A Cincinnati native, Mr. Wellinghoff graduated from Purcell High School in 1934 an and put himself through night school at Xavier, quitting just short of getting his degree. He worked as a trader for Merrill Lynch for more than 40 years. Mr.

Wellinghoff was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth B. Wellinghoff, in 1998. In addition to his daughter Susan, survivors include another daughter, Christine Horan of Montgomery; two sons, Richard B. Wellinghoff of Houston and David Wellinghoff of Hyde Park; and nine grandchildren. Mass of Christian burial is 10 a.m.

The former fourth-grade teacher at the former Newtown Elementary in Newtown died April 14 at VistaCare hospice in Anderson Township of Alzheimer's disease. Mrs. Huey was 81. "She was very gregarious and upbeat, always wanting to do things and be with people," said her husband of nearly 50 years, Robert M. Huey of Anderson Township.

Mrs. Huey was born in Weirton, W.Va. In 1941 she graduated from Marshall University in Huntington, W.Va., with a bachelor's degree in education. She taught in West Virginia schools for a few years before becoming a camp director for the Girl Scouts of America. In 1950, she accepted a position as a camp director in Cincinnati and eventually became the assistant executive director.

Mrs. Huey married in 1953 and worked for the Girl Scouts until 1956, when she decided to leave her professional job to raise her three children. After retiring in 1990, she traveled to other countries and parts of the United States. She was a member of a bridge club that met for more than 40 years. An avid sports fan, she followed Cincinnati Reds and Bengals games. She was an active member of Hyde Park Community United Methodist Church, and participated in many of its social and community events. In addition to her husband, survivors include two sons, Robert T.

Huey of Detroit and David R. Huey of Loveland; a daughter, Beth Anne Macke of Anderson Township; two sisters, Sara Bond of Shepard's Town, W.Va., and Phyllis Luvara of Solomon's Cove, two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
